Turkey & US want democracy in Mideast

US Ambassador to Turkey Francis J. Ricciardone has said Turkey and the United States think the same about the Middle East and that both countries want democracy, development and stability in the region.

Ricciardone told reporters on Wednesday in the southern city of Gaziantep that, not only as NATO members but also as friends, Turkey and the US share the same goals and are in close cooperation.

Ricciardone defined Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad's recent statement on reforms as unsatisfactory, but said the US wants the same thing as Turkey.

Earlier in the day, Ricciardone visited a "baklava" shop to watch how the special dessert is made, and met Gaziantep Governor Süleyman Kamçı. During his meeting with the governor, Ricciardone said he is visiting Gaziantep not only as a tourist but also on business, adding he is willing to boost relations between the two countries.

The US ambassador said he is also eager to encourage trade and investment and hopes trade and tourism can be enhanced between Gaziantep and the United States.
