Turkey to join BRIC countries soon, former UK PM says

Guys, Not to drag down Turkey, it has tremendous potential but it doesn't belong to BRIC category. All the BRIC countries have either huge human capital or extraordinary resources. Also BRIC is an economic term not political one. Turkey is already a higher middle income country, it won't be long before it becomes developed one. If their economy raises to 2-3 trillion, they'll be developed already. But its not the case with other BRIC countries, each of them has a potential to cross over $10 trillion and still be developing. For India and China the number is well over $50 trillion. That's the difference.

According to the World Bank these is how they classify a developed nation

Turkey has a GDP per capita of about $15,000

for more details you can go to this link to know how world bank classify countries

How we Classify Countries | Data

Turkey fulfil all criteria to be called a developed nation although some sources says Turkey is upper-middle economy and not a fully developed nation yet
Thanks for the link. I still don't know if they classify according to nominal GDP per Capita or according to Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). That $15,000 number for Turkey is according to PPP.

Probably that is why some sources sources write like this

High-income OECD members
There are 30 High-income OECD members,[22] although there are three other OECD members ( Mexico, Turkey, and Chile) that are not high-income members (but rather are upper-middle-income economies), while Estonia (being a high income economy) is expected to join OECD in 2010.[23] As of 2010, the High-income OECD membership is as follows:
23 countries in Europe:

Developed country - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

PS: Whatever the case is... it is still ahead of BRIC nations and several other European countries so do not underestimate your country :agree:

BRIC are fast growing and large emerging markets that are go to replace the present economic order of the world by 2050. Even by most pessimistic estimates US, which is at present the largest economy, will be relegated to the fifth place. Such is the growth potential of BRIC.

However, Turkey is different story. Although Turkish economy is fairly large and relatively developed, I don’t think in seer numbers and aggregates Turkey is going affect the world economic order. Hence Turkey cannot be part of BRIC

These are all political terms. Economically its just BRIC. South Africa wants to join BRIC because politically they'll get bigger voice if they join them.

Turkey is much poorer than Belgium.

Bro. i think the reason is, we are more crowded than Belgium. I mean population of Turkiye. that's why Belgium's GDP is higher than us. so we shouldn't say Turkiye is much poorer. am i wrong?

If Turkiye joined to BRIC, both side will have great advance.

Personelly, I do not care whether Turkey joined the BRIC, If the growth of my economical power, Military/civilian technologies increase with great percentages. If it was OCCAR, I may tell my wishes related with advatages of participation because This organisation is established to encourage/support the mostly military technological cooperations between countries.

What is there to join BRIC? It is neither an economic block nor a custom union. It is just an acronym coined by Goldman Sachs

I dont think labelling a country BRIC will do any good, for better or for worse.
As for Turkey, some source say she is developed some says she is upper-middle.

But i think categorizing it as an NIC (newly industrialized countries) is the most appropriate.

NIC countries:
South Africa, Mexico, Brazil, China, India, Malaysia, Phillipines, Thailand, Turkey.

But, compared to most of them Turkey is far ahed, especially China, Phllipines, India, China and Thailand. So in a few years Turkey will probably be placed among industrialized/developed countries.

As for BRIC, i think it is normal that Turkey is not categorized in BRIC because BRIC countries will be placed among top 6 countries considering Gross Domestic Product in 2050 (according toa Goldman Sachs study). Whereas Turkey wont change drastically due to its population.
So potentially are those countries much more powerful, unless Turkey starts a new empire again (a Turkish empire or whatever):smokin:

It's not only about BRIC nations, other countries will also change the current world order. Ever heard of 'the next eleven'?

These countries are; Indonesia, Turkey, Mexico, Iran, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Vietnam, South Korea and the Philippines.

yes, I think it's easier to develop as a small nation compared to a big country. But not every small nation is developed.
