Turkey to export US$1.5 billion worth arms
The latest statistics show that Turkey can export up to $1.5 billion in military goods this year. This will be an all time high for Turkey and this sum will almost double the $832 million in exports which were achieved in 2009. An official from the Under secretariat for Defense Industries (SSM) has stated that the government is expecting high payments from previous contracts and a lot of income from various substantial receipts from contracts signed in the past year.
Five years ago the export of the Turkish defense industry was barely $200 million. Both official and industry figures point at the rise in the international concurrency in this sector. According to Turkeys Association of Defense Industry Manufacturers (SaSaD), the local industries have also achieved a huge rise in export $669 million in 2009, when compared to $576 million in 2008. SSMs official statistics for the exports in 2009 was $832 million, but the difference is caused, because of the inclusion of offsets for the countrys civilian aviation industry. SaSaD counts only the defense exports.
An offset is a compensation made by a company to a foreign country in change for the purchase of the companys services. The SSM is establishing a defense export support agency, because it is vitally important for Turkeys government to boost their sales and the boosting of the performance in this sector is a key strategic plan. The government overviews every potential deal and negotiates it, because this benefits a lot of Turkish manufacturers cooperation with other countries.
Of course there are some countries which are the main goal for Turkeys Export they are mostly located in the Middle East, South Asian, Central Asian and a couple of European countries.
The sectors where the Turkish companies have the most offers include electronic software and systems, aerospace, naval platforms and armored vehicles. A potential top exporter is Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) which has just made a huge sell of major civilian aviation equipment under offset arrangements with European and US aircraft manufacturers. The names of these manufacturers include famous companies like Airbus, Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
The Armored vehicles export is definitely Turkeys defense industrys most successful export and companies like Otokar and FNSS have succeeded in negotiation contracts worth more than $1 billion. All of these figures were achieved in just a couple of years.
In 2010, FNSS achieved a deal for joint-production with Malaysia which was worth $500 million. According to the deal, 48 armored combat vehicles will be sold to Malaysia. Former Soviet republics are also some of the clients of Turkeys defense exports. For instance Turkmenistan sealed a 55 million-euro deal for two new-generation patrol boats which are going to be put to use in the Caspian Sea. Pakistan is also an annual client of Turkey as they agreed on a contract for the upgrade of the U.S. built F-16 fighter jets. TAI is the company which is going to undertake this project.
In the mean time TAI is upgrading Jordans F-16 fighter jets while Otokar signed a $24 million deal with Azerbaijan.
Attack and utility helicopters are also a thing which is greatly exported by Turkey. A multi-billion-dollar deal was signed with Agusta Westland of Italy for the production of 60 T-129 attack helicopters. Soon, Turkey will have to choose between Agusta Westland and the USs Sikorsky Aircraft for a partner in the joint production of 109 utility helicopters for Turkeys security and armed forces.
