Because at that time... ISIS wasn't seen as a threat to the world..till they begun their foreign terror act...
And secondly ... Mostly bc the border was too wide and open to even do smthing about it... go try close a 800+km border... when UE himself can't secure a 150km+ one...

Remember all the heated debates, accusations and conflicts regarding the border security between Iran and Pakistan? Again and again many Iranians accused Pakistan of being incompetent and simply not able to implement a decent border management. They criticized that people could easily cross the border without being stopped by the Pakistani forces.

Well, last year 30.000 (!!!) Afghan "refugees" entered Turkey via Iran. The Iranian authorities did nothing to prevent them from illegally crossing the Turkish-Iranian border.

Now, the Turkish gov't speculated that approx. 3 million Afghanis could leave Iran for Turkey. THIS is why they really decided to build a huge permanent barrier between Iran and Turkey similar to the wall at the Syrian-Turkish border.

Even though Iran officially welcomed this decision, this wall is going to prevent the predominantly Sunni Afghanis from exiting Iran, which the Shia cleric won't like, I guess.

3 million new migrants could come to Turkey from Iran, Deputy PM Kaynak says

Some three million new refugees from Iran may come to Turkey, Deputy Prime Minister Veysi Kaynak said Sunday during an interview.

"According to the information we have received, there are around three million unauthorized migrants in Iran and they are trying to come to Turkey. Unfortunately they are mostly Afghans. They are again trying to come from the east of Iran," Kaynak said to CNN Türk.

He added that a total of 30,000 refugees come in through the eastern Turkish provinces of Iğdır and Ağrı in 2016 alone.

"We worry that the Iranian state is ignoring their migration toward Turkey, though not necessarily assisting them," he added.

Kaynak said that Turkey tends to be transit point rather than a final destination for migrants coming from Iran, and that Europe should be watching closely.

"Europe and the rest of the world should think about it. They want to come to Turkey as a transit point and they do not want to stay in the country. They want to cross into the west and for them, Turkey is an important barrier and is taking on a significant financial burden."

Kaynak explained that Turkey was in the process of building a border war in the east, as well as a reception center, both of which are to be completed in a few months.

The deputy prime minister added that he had received information that some three thousand unauthorized migrants had already crossed into Turkey from Ağrı and Iğdır provinces since the beginning of 2017.

No it was actually 7 million isis fighters and lets just forget the fact that 90% of isis/other terrorists are locals from Iraq and Syria, lets instead blame others for our own misery its trendy in muslim countires anyways.

It is the opposite. Erdoğan is the guy who illegally holds those Syrian refugees in Turkey who want to go to Europe. According to International Human Right Agreements, no Government has right to stop any refugee from any border. Erdoğan does it.

Also EU is the one who illegally asks Erdoğan to hold Syrian refugees in Turkey. It seems like you have no knowledge about international laws, yet you are still talking about it. Why would someone talk about something s/he doesnt know Just ask it to learn.

When you keep on throwing your dirt at your neighbor door, pretending as if your dirt is for them to manage, the time comes when neighbor will eventually be forced into taking measures.

Iran must be careful in this respect, specially in its dealing with Pakistan. Externalizing home grown issues can give some mileage for home audience but in longer run, it will only backfire in geopolitics.

we always get customized govt who serves everyone else agenda but Pakistanis.. Otherwise who will tolerate proxy wars with open Afghan borders for 70 years.. Indeed a lesson for us.
