That is because most of China is uninhabitable or has people living living under harsh weather conditions. Come to think of it, if you subtract those areas then the viable landmass of India is only slightly less than China's.

Coastal China looks pretty bright to me. Most of your population lives there. Interior China is sparsely populated. the map reflects it.
