Turkey sends special envoy for talks with Libyan opposition

Turkey has sent a special envoy to rebel stronghold Benghazi for talks with the Libyan opposition fighting to end Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's 41-year rule, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Tuesday.

The former ambassador to Libya, Ömer Şölenli, has been dispatched to Benghazi to deliver a message from Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Davutoğlu told a group of journalists accompanying him on a trip to Bahrain, Cihan news agency said.

Davutoğlu was speaking a day after he met with an envoy of Muammar Gaddafi, Libyan Deputy Foreign Minister Abdelati Obeidi, who visited Ankara as part of a European tour to discuss ways to end conflict in Libya.

A representative from the Libyan opposition is also expected to visit Ankara, officials have said, although no breakthrough was in sight as of Tuesday afternoon in finding common ground between the two sides that would pave the way for a cease-fire and a political settlement. Davutoğlu said the Libyan opposition was against any solution formula under which the Gaddafi family would be in power.
