Turkey President Erdogan backs India's UNSC bid

NEW DELHI: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan supported India's bid for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, even as he called for major reforms in the exclusive body.

Referring to the ongoing fight against the ISIS, the crisis in Syria and countries like the US, Russia and Iran supporting different groups in the region, Erdogan said using one terrorist organisation against another can be counter- productive.

Noting that there are "differences" as well as "commonalities" between the two countries, India and Turkey must "quash" prejudices against each other, he said.

He also said that India-Turkey relations are "significantly behind" their potential and for a fair world both countries have to work together.

"India, with a population of 1.3 billion is not a part of the UNSC. Over 1.7 billion people live in the Islamic world but they too are not a part of the UNSC. A nation like Japan is not a part of the group. This is not a healthy sign. We need a fair and just world order by bringing in significant reforms in the UNSC," Erdogan said here.

The Turkish leader said one cannot expect the UN Security Council to dispense justice without more representation.

The membership of the body should be on a rotational basis with 20 to 30 countries holding the mantle at a time so that all nations get a chance to be a member of the key world body, he said.

"Only five permanent members (the US, Russia, France, China and the UK) have veto power in the UNSC. The non- permanent members' vote does not count. (Then) why do they deceive (the world)? The UNSC cannot dispense justice," the Turkish President said.

Erdogan, who is on a two-day visit to India, was speaking in Turkish at the Jamia Millia Islamia university where he was awarded a Doctor of Letters degree.

However, earlier there was opposition from a section of students over honouring Erdogan alleging "he is involved in blatant human rights violation and has become a dictator in Turkey".

Erdogan said the existing global order was "shying away" from dealing with those violating human rights, as he attacked his Syrian counterpart Bashar al-Assad.

Lashing out at ISIS, Erdogan said the terrorist group is "blasphemy" in the name of Islam and has no connection with the religion.

"Terrorism can only be fought by tackling poverty and inequality. It will be unfair to blame religion for terrorism," he said.

Erdogan also urged Indians not to view Turkey from the "prism" of the western media.

"Please, please, please do not follow the western media when you look at Turkey. This is a propaganda against Turkey by the western media and terrorist organisations," he said.

Long live India - Turkey relationship!

India understands turkey well, we know turkey is a democratic and progressive nation.

Turkey and India has many things in common, India values Turkey as an important partner in dealing with global issues.

More crap about India's attempt to join UNSC. India has a better chance of entering NSG than UNSC. The only way for India to join UNSC is to threaten to destroy it by withdrawing from UN completely.

NEW DELHI

Turkey and India will never bow down to terrorism, Turkish president said Monday.

“We, as two friend countries, will never give terrorism any opportunity to make us bow down,” President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi.

Erdogan arrived in India late Sunday for a three-day visit, the first trip at the presidential level from Turkey to India in seven years.

“Turkey is in full solidarity with India in their fight against terrorism. The aim of terror organizations is to discourage…. It is not important how much effort they make, terrorists will be certainly drown in the blood they spill,” he said after condemning a deadly attack last week on a police patrol in eastern India.

Twenty-five security officers were killed in a remote part of eastern India on April 24 by Maoist rebels -- one of the deadliest attacks in the region in the recent years.

The aim of the Maoist Naxalites’ 50-years terrorist campaign is to overthrow the government and set up communist rule.

The fight against FETO

Erdogan also thanked the Indian government for their support following the defeated July 2016 coup blamed on the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO), which left 249 people martyred and nearly 2,200 injured.

“I believe through measures they will take, India will root out FETO in their country,” he said, warning of “a serious threat to other countries where FETO is carrying out activities under the guise of legal-seeming foundations.”

According to the Turkish government, FETO and its U.S.-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the coup attempt. Ankara has said FETO is behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police and judiciary, and has also accused it of infiltrating other countries through educational institutions, among others.

For his part, Modi also expressed his country’s determination to work together with Turkey in the fight against terrorism.

“The president and I decided to work together to strengthen cooperation both bilaterally and multilaterally to counter this threat effectively,” he said, adding:

“We must put an end to the cross-border movement of terrorists. They also need to act against those who create, support, shelter, and spread terrorism.”

Bilateral ties

Stressing India's importance in terms of its geography and economy, Erdogan said, “We see India plays a critical role in all international developments in Asia.”

He vowed to enhance relations with India in all areas.

Modi also said that the countries should forge stronger business ties.

“We would like to encourage stronger partnerships with Turkish companies over our flagship programs and projects."

Before the press conference, the two countries signed agreements on bilateral cooperation, culture, and communication.

India -- which has the second-largest Muslim population in the world -- is a member of the G20 and is one of the so-called BRICS countries -- a group of five major emerging economies along with Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa.

- UN Security Council 'must be reformed'

In a separate appearance, Turkey's president reiterated his call to reform the United Nations Security Council.

"In general, the United Nations' structure, but in particular the United Nations Security Council structure must be reformed as soon as possible," Erdogan told Jamia Millia Islamia University, where he received an honorary doctorate.

"For example, who can say that the United Nations Security Council has a healthy structure when it doesn't include India, which has a population of 1.3 billion?" Erdogan asked. "How can the UNSC be fair when the Muslim world's 1.7 billion population isn't represented?"

Erdogan has repeatedly said in recent years that "the world is bigger than five," calling for reforms to the UN body so "the fate of the world’s 196 states" no longer depends on the five permanent Security Council members.

I think the titles of this thread and of the first (re-posted) article are misleading as Mr. Erdogan only mentions India's non-representation in the UNSC among other groups of countries (the Muslim world) and specific countries (Japan) to highlight that the SC, in his view, does not have a "healthy structure" because it does not represent the majority of the world's population. As a side note, the source of the first article is the Times of India (http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/United-Nations-Security-Council) so it comes as no surprise that the inference from what the Turkish President stated is biased.

As a counter argument to Mr. Erdogan, I think that the successfulness of the UNSC in representing the global population can be evaluated based on a few factors other than the size of the populations of the SC's member nations, the most significant in my opinion being political ideology. For example, the US represents the capitalist world while China represents the communist world*. In this case then, the SC arguably represents the global population reasonably well.

*I understand that China is not fully communist, specifically in relation to its economic structure; however, when it comes to politics, China can be considered communist (See: http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2010/07/how_communist_is_china.html)

Other than that of economics, cultural and trade matters we should disregard rest of the statements. His views have become more shrill and counter productive. At this rate he might very soon become trump of turkey.

The Indian media is deliberately misinterpreting his statement to India's advantage (again).

Erdogan said:

"India, with a population of 1.3 billion is not a part of the UNSC. Over 1.7 billion people live in the Islamic world but they too are not a part of the UNSC. This is not a healthy sign."

He criticized the UN structures in general. He explained that every major nation and religious group like Muslims and Hindus should have a representative member in the UNSC. What does this mean? Pakistan is expected to surpass Indonesia as the country with the single largest Muslim population + they're a nuclear power + culturally and traditionally closer to the Middle Eastern Muslim nations.

-> Pakistan and India should be added to the UNSC as permanent members, according to Erdogan.

Listen, Ankara generally supports Pakistan. This is state policy in Turkey. Due to this fact, Ankara always includes Islamabad if it officially supports New Delhi.

Another example: Officially, Turkey backs India's claim to NSG as much as it supports Pakistan's bid. But as long as certain nations block Pakistan's membership, Turkey is going to block India's bid. But if India stops lobbying against Pakistan, we'll support India.

This is actually a very smart foreign policy. We're effectively defending Pakistan's interests without publicly acting against India. This is our way to deal with India's influence. Unlike some Arab nations, we don't visit their military parades/national holiday or buy weapons made in India. Turkey's position on Kashmir is clear.

New Delhi: Hours before landing in New Delhi, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Sunday called for a ‘multilateral dialogue’ on Kashmir, with Turkey’s involvement, said reports.

Erdogan’s stance is likely to be upsetting to India, which has always maintained that Kashmir is a bilateral issue between itself and Pakistan.

Expressing concern at the standoff between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, Erdogan said in an interview, “We should not allow more casualties to occur and by strengthening multilateral dialogue, we can be involved, and through multilateral dialogue, I think we have to seek out ways to settle this question once and for all, which will benefit both countries.” (...)
