What's new

turkey defence export in 6 mounth in 2022 worth 1.9 bilion dollars

There is an increase of 48% compared to the same period of the previous year. The trend that gives hope for the sector to reach the target of 5 billion dollars export in 2023 fiscal year, continues by getting stronger.

While only one company (ASELSAN) found a place in the Defense News Top 100 in 2008, seven companies were reached in the 2020 list, and defense exports, which were approximately 550 million dollars in 2008,(link , link2) can now reach this figure with the first month of the year.

The civil institution that published the figures is called TIM, that is, the Turkish Exporters Assembly.

It reports monthly the export figures realized through customs channel and other official and open transactions. Due to the sectoral grouping of products and goods, it is possible to track defense exports through these data. However, due to the decision taken last May, country information and content in defense export items began to be restricted. Until a few months ago, it was possible to see which system was sold to which country for which amount. This information is no longer available in open sources.

By 2030 it will be between 20 and 30 billions when they start producing serialy expensive toys like submarines, aircrafts, tanks, pvo systems....

Indeed, 2030 may be a very ambitious target for this. It should not be forgotten that Turkiye has to maintain its military effectiveness and deterrence due to its geopolitical conditions. Therefore, export figures in the production of the defense industry are the tip of the iceberg. Already, hundreds of different system development and R&D programs continue with the support of SSB, and TAF related institutions/foundations. TR's aim is to completely end foreign dependency in its military/defense capacity that will sustain its independent interests. The enormous acceleration in exports is a by-product of the effort to reach this goal.

In the TIM strategic report published at the beginning of 2021, the Turkiye's total export target for 2030 is around 300 billion dollars. According to the report, the defense and aerospace industry is one of the sectors with the highest export growth in the next 14 years. Between 2021 and 2035, the increase in exports in this sector was expected to be 425 percent. However, the report's estimates for the past year have fallen short of the actual figures. (Turkiye's total exports reached 225 billion 291 million dollars in 2021 with an increase of 32.8 percent compared to the previous year, for example.)

In monetary terms; The target of reaching 11.5 billion dollars in the 2030-33 period is envisaged. However, in the details of the report, the reflection of the main system development activities, which are currently ongoing in TR, on exports has not been mentioned much. In short, we can say that the expectation in terms of defense circles is between 11-16 billion dollars.

"Naki Polat, Chairman of the Board of SSI (Defence and Aviation Industry Exporters' Association ), stated that the sector's exports have increased by more than 250 percent in the short time since the establishment of the Association. Stating that the sector can reach an export figure of 4.5 billion dollars this year, Polat drew attention to the fact that the sector exports to 176 countries."

In the process of the formation and globalization of the Turkish defense industry ecosystem, its transformation into an organization spread over 170+ countries makes a much more strategic sense, rather than these realized export amounts. Defense cooperation is not a simple type of trade, and it is an area that has its own bureaucratic layers and which states that dominate the market in many countries are trying to keep under tight control.

Israel has quite strategic connections. For example, in the field of UAV systems, it is known that the industrial capabilities of countries such as the UK and Russia are seriously supported by Israel.
