Turkey cancels visit by Swedish minister as planned protests stoke tension

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said on Saturday that a planned visit next week by his Swedish counterpart to Ankara has been cancelled after Swedish authorities granted permission for protests in Stockholm.

The demonstrations planned in Stockholm for later on Saturday were aimed at Turkey and Sweden's efforts to join NATO, stoking tensions with Ankara whose approval is needed for the Nordic country to join the military alliance.

Organisers said around 500-600 people were expected to gather to protest against Sweden's NATO bid and show support for Kurds in a demonstration that has received a permit from the Stockholm Police.

The protests against Turkey and Sweden's bid to join NATO sharply heightened tensions at a time when Sweden and Finland are seeking Ankara's backing to gain entry to NATO.

It is clear that Turkey has made its decision, i.e. never to accept Sweden's (and Finland's) entry into NATO, constantly asking for trade-offs, even the F-16Vs are among them.
