Tunisia to Allow Passport-free Travel for the Citizens of the Maghreb
Tunisia is adopting new measures concerning the residency of the Maghreb’s citizens in Tunisia.
According to Mosaique FM, Abdallah Triki, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs confirmed on Sunday that “the citizens of the Greater Maghreb will be able to enter and stay in Tunisia for as long as they want with only with an identity card.”
He added that, “They also can have a job without preliminary permission. And they will have the right to vote in local elections, which will be included in the new constitution.”
Mohamed Ali Nafti, the press attaché of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs added, “If we are to grant the privilege of moving freely in Tunisia to the previously listed countries, the decision should be reciprocal. In other words, Tunisians should also be given the same rights of movement as other citizens of the Greater Maghreb. This is why an official agreement must be reached, so that we can officially confirm the stipulations of the treaty”.
This agreement would include the five countries of the Greater Maghreb: Tunisia, Algeria, Libya, Morocco and Mauritania .
The Tunisian government has already demonstrated its commitment to enhance relations between the Maghreb countries. During the President Marzouki’s visit to Morocco in February 2012, he revealed his hope to revive the Maghreb Arab Union, which was an organization established in February 1989 that aimed to unify the Great Maghreb and to enhance the socio-economic and political relations between the countries of the region. The union has been inactive due to various disagreements between Morocco and Algeria about the Western Sahara.
Marzouki also offered to hold a Maghreb Countries’ Summit involving Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Mauritania and Tunisia. This summit is going to take place in October 2012.
Triki was at a ministerial conference and was not available to comment on these new developments.
