Türkiye and Italy will deepen cooperation in the defence industry, the Turkish president has said.

Speaking at a news conference with Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi on Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the deepening of Türkiye-Italy defence industry cooperation serves mutual interests and both states are on the same page.

Erdogan also said Türkiye and Italy are willing to sign an agreement as soon as possible on the SAMP/T air defence system project.

“We discussed the issue again in our meeting today, and our defence ministers handled it in the same way, we want to sign the SAMP/T as soon as possible. There is no problem in our agreement, we also have an agreement with (French President Emmanuel) Macron,” Erdogan said.

Ahead of the news conference, the two countries signed nine cooperation agreements in several areas.

Erdogan also said the two leaders discussed Türkiye-EU relations, adding: “I would like to state that I thanked to him for Italy’s support for further improvement of our relationship with the union.”

Draghi appreciates Türkiye’s role

“The developments in our region have concretely demonstrated once again that Türkiye is important in many fields for the EU,” said Erdogan.

For his part, Draghi said: “We’re facing great challenges, starting from the war in Ukraine, and we want to work together to address them.”

Italy and Türkiye are “united in condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine and in supporting Kiev. At the same time, we are on the frontline to seek a negotiated solution that could halt hostilities and guarantee a stable and long-lasting peace,” he added.

Draghi thanked Türkiye for its mediation role in unblocking the grain exports from Ukraine, adding: “We need to free these (exports) as soon as possible to avoid a humanitarian and social catastrophe in the poorest countries of the world.”

At the Elmau G7 meeting, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described the lines of a plan on which the UN is working, which foresees a central role for Türkiye, he said.

The Italian prime minister also said stabilisation in Libya is crucial, noting that Italy and Türkiye will work closely for it.

SAMP-T air defence system on agenda

Well then maybe we should go for the Gowind deal and ask for France to block the sale of SAMP-T to Turkey.

Why does Erdoğan want SAMP-T if Hisar and Siper are so amazing?

The mentioned Turkish systems are still under development with ABM features being added in the second stage of the project whereas SAMP-T has known anti ballistic capabilities. Apparently, the Turkish military doesn't want a gap in Turkey's defense systems. Wise decision.

So Hisar isn't ready yet? It's not in production and in service?

Turkey should use this NATO opportunity to master the turboshaft and turbofan engine

by 2030 Turkey should leap frog Italy, Spain and others in Europe in terms of military technology

by 2040 they should trump France and close in on Germany and UK

in 25 years I see Turkey as a global leader in military technology

Cry all you want Macron will do what their defence companies ask him to do. He will certainly not harm his own countries interest just for the sake of greece.

Same will happen with the F-16 deal. Despite greeks daily begging US gov will do what is best for their own companies.

Sen. Graham Throws His Support Behind F-16 Sale to Turkey; Others Are Opposed

(CNSNews.com) – Days after President Biden reaffirmed his support for selling F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) returned from a visit to the country, vowing to do all in his power to ensure the deal goes through.

Graham, who met with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s chief advisor, Ibrahim Kalin, acknowledged that the U.S. and Turkey “have had a problematic relationship at times” but said it was imperative to strengthen bilateral ties.

“These fighter jets, in the hands of our NATO allies, will create a sense of stability and provide capability to the Turkish military that is most definitely in America’s national security interests,” he said.

The administration’s plan faces potential opposition in Congress, however. Some lawmakers from both parties are frustrated by Erdogan’s behavior, including his maneuvering over recent weeks to hold up applications by Sweden and Finland to join NATO, purportedly over disputes about Kurds and “terrorism.”

Unnerved by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland applied in the spring to join NATO. After threatening to stand in their way, on the eve of the alliance’s summit in Madrid last week Erdogan reached an agreement with the two Nordic governments, and lifted his veto.

He then met with Biden on the summit sidelines, and Biden told reporters later that he had restated his support for an F-16 sale. Without having been specifically asked, he volunteered the information that there had been “no quid pro quo.”

“I said back in December, as you’ll recall, we should sell them the F-16 jets and modernize those jets as well,” Biden said during his end-of-summit press conference. “It’s not in our interest not to do that. And I indicated to them that I’ve not changed my position at all since December.”

“And there was no quid pro quo with that; it was just that we should sell,” he added. “But I need congressional approval to be able to do that, and I think we can get that.”

French companies right now have significant reasons to support Greece.

FDI HN,the Gowind offer,Rafale, maybe more systems and even SAMP-T for us too.

Your leaders have been nagging for 3 years for the Americans to sell them F-16Vs and even let them back on the F-35 program.

If the Congress says no,then Turkey is not getting any F-16Vs. And the Greek and Armenian lobbies and other American politicians can veto this.

It is better to strengthen air defence systems meanwhile excellerate development of our own fighter programme. Eurofighter is excellent but too expensive.
True, the problem of Turkish air defence systems/forces is that they aren't multi layered air defence

We have our own 6 different multi-layered air defence systems such as KORKUT , SUNGUR , HISAR-A, HISAR-O , SIPER to eliminate all threats ( Aircrafts , Helicopters , Drones , Cruise Missiles ,etc ) . with S400 Air Defense System to allow Area Air Defense of Military Bases and Strategic Facilities against enemy attacks at long range and in distributed architecture

The development process of new SIPER models with range of 150 km that can be effective against also ballistic missiles . We signed an agreement, a letter of intention with EUROSAM ( France-Italy ) like 4 years ago, but nothing happened until today.
