What's new

TTP Murdered 11 foreign mountaineers at Nanga Parbat base camp.

Wait a minute...is the camp site of the killing really that far? No one has reached there till now?

Looks like it was really a remote area, how did the terrorists get that far in the middle of the night? You would have to be pretty determined to do something like this.

and well funded and trained...

Which one do you prefer?

Both of the tactics have their pros and cons...

Currently, we are doing nothing except waiting for 2014...then maybe we'll analyze the situation post withdrawal. We are just drifting away....

Option 1 - but I hope our "Aalim" will have taken note of your less than patriotic suggestion that 1. we are doing nothing 2. Waiting for 2014 and possibly thousands more of innocents to pay checks our generals want to cash/

Nut I suppose he can get away with lecturing me on patriotism, after all, he preached Islam to Muslims, honestly who more than Muslims needs Islam

or make everybody do their job...
much intelligence is rendered useless by passing on to local police hoping they will do their job...and nothing is done...

That's the problem.

Expecting the Army to do the job is foolish, this isn't a conventional war where you destroy the other guy's SAMs and Armour and get your Artillery raining hell...this is totally different.

This war is or will be a failure or success of this whole nation, each and everyone of us, not of the Army alone.

Army has it's lead role perhaps, but not the only role. Police, political authorities, public, media, civil organizations all have to be involved in this.

Just putting the blame on the Army isn't gonna cut it.

TTP claims responsibility for killing tourists in Gilgit-Baltistan
ISLAMABAD: The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility on Sunday for the killing of nine foreign tourists and their guide in Gilgit-Balitistan.
The incident took place near a camp base, where the tourists were staying.
TTP spokesperson Ehsanullah Ehsan called The Express Tribune and said the group’s faction named Junud-e-Hafsa carried out the brutal attack.
He said the killing was revenge against the US drone attacks and killing of TTP chief Waliur Rehman Mehsud.
“This will tell the international community about our feelings and sentiments against the killing of our fighters,” he said.
Government officials said five Ukrainians and a number of Chinese were killed. One Pakistani also died and one Chinese survivor has been recovered.
The climbers were staying at a first camp, around 4,200 feet from Nanga Parbat, one of the highest mountains in the world, in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan

Foreign tourists’ murder: Tour operators urge authorities to seal the area – The Express Tribune
ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Association of Tour Operators (PATO) has condemned the brutal killing of nine foreign tourists near Nanga Parbat in Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) and urged the military and government authorities to immediately seal the area and search the gunmen.
“It takes 18 hours on foot to reach the road,” PATO President Amjad Ayub said, adding that 18 hours have not passed since the incident and if the area is properly cordoned off and searched, the gunmen can be caught.
Ayub said unless the attackers had helicopters, which he said was highly unlikely, they would still be in the area.
He said there is no way for the gunmen to escape the area except the Shadra Valley, Mazeno Pass and the Bunar Valley.
Tour operator Ghulam Nabi, who belongs to the Fairy Meadows, said the tour operators can help the government identify the potential escape routes but the authorities must mobilise security forces immediately to perform aerial search of the area.
The tour operators suggested that the attack on the foreign tourists took place on the “Diamer face of Nanga Parbat,” correcting earlier reports which claimed the incident had occurred in the Fairy Meadows.
Nanga Parbat, an 8.126 metre-high peak, has three main faces for trekking: Diamer, Rupal (south face) and Raikot (north face) – which is near Fairy Meadows.
The tour operators also challenged a G-B police officer’s statement that the tourists were killed inside a hotel. The operators claimed there were no hotels in the Diamer face area and they suggested the tourists were staying in camps.
Ayub said the attack was a continuation of killings at Babusar and in Chilas in 2012, which he said always coincided with the tourist season.
“Our tourism industry is already battered, this incident will further destroy it,” Ayub said. “Verbal condemnation and setting up an inquiry commission will not solve the crisis. It can only be resolved through prompt action”
The tour operators said adventure tourism will be hit the hardest by the incident but overall hundreds of people associated with the tourism industry in G-B could be affected. Instead of spending weeks on security clearance of foreign tourists, the government should provide them protection when they visit Pakistan, the tour operators said.
Nabi added that more than the economy, the image of Pakistan is at stake.
“People will hear this news around the world and they will start hating Pakistan even though the potential for tourism in this country is huge,” he said.

So how will you deal with the bad press that will come with option 1?

Hasn't the missing persons issue, Bugti, lal Masjid been enough of an indication as to the trend? We still have folks like Zarvan and Pak One over here...thousands other Taliban lovers.

The option of going gung ho, and also hanging a couple of Taliban lovers publicly might or might not work.

Please be reasonable - they get paid to do this job - what you are suggesting is like going to the surgeon and the surgeon telling you "hey, you got to participate in your own surgery"

Please understand that in time there will be an accounting - if you think people think poorly of the army, you ain't seen nothing yet --and the external situation by then may be very different, perhaps a lot more hostile - if these village boys had any sense they would understand that they have a good thing going and they are risking it all - perhaps there may be individuals inside the institution who will be asking if this decision is worth their future.

Once that questioning starts, the end result will be a very different army, be rest assured of that.

There are 2 ways to fight this war:

1- Go gung ho with a determined attitude, silencing all criticism in that period.

2- Please everyone and make a softer approach. This would be time consuming.

Go gung ho against who all ? against the bad or good taliban? or the shia-sunni sectarian militants? As long as a country prop up non state proxies for influence in the region it won't have peace at home either, it happend with India in case of LTTE we learned our lesson. I guess it's about time that Pakistan take a cue from India's mistake. It's a hard choice but I guess its about time when Pakistanis rise up and say it loud and clear enough is enough. But if not, then well more power to mightiest out there in the ring.

Army can do it if given free hand... as it was the case during general babur's Karachi operation.....
no media outcry ...no meddling from Judiciary....and it was a success...

First of all before looking for solutions one should have a strong will but somehow this intensity is missing, it's more like a drowning man trying to grab on to which ever straw he can get hold of.
