WASHINGTON

Relations between the United States and Pakistan are "very good," President Donald Trump said Wednesday.

The brief remarks came as Trump prepared to depart the White House for Ohio, where he is set to visit a tank factory and meet with supporters.

Trump said his administration will soon be meeting with Pakistani officials.

U.S.-Pakistani relations had taken a turn for the worse in recent years, with the U.S. announcing a $300 million cut in military aid to Pakistan in 2018.

Trump attacked Pakistan on Twitter in November, saying it was not doing enough to stop terrorism.

"We no longer pay Pakistan the $Billions because they would take our money and do nothing for us, Bin Laden being a prime example, Afghanistan being another. They were just one of many countries that take from the United States without giving anything in return. That’s ENDING!" Trump fumed.

Trump was referring to the 2011 U.S. raid on Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan that resulted in the death of the al-Qaeda leader. The site where bin Laden was holed up was just miles away from Pakistan's premier military academy.

The main sticking point between Washington and Islamabad has been the issue of the Taliban’s presence in Afghanistan. The U.S. has been engaged in a more than 17-year war against the group and is currently engaged in talks with it to hammer out a prospective peace deal to end the conflict.

Officials of the two countries have met numerous times over the past two months. In September, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Pakistan and met with Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi and then-newly elected Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Pakistan should try to improve relations with the USA. We need to move the relationship past Afghanistan or India/Kashmir. We don't need Aid or military equipment. The USA is a huge consumer market and has technology that can help our economy (especially in the energy sector). We can buy equipment and know-how from USA companies to exploit our shale oil/gas as well grow our power sector. They can offer us a huge consumer and capital market.

.
US should also look to improve relations with Pakistan and recognize Pakistan's genuine concerns. USA is always batting for Indians in South Asia. Be it terrorism or Kashmir, USA talks India's language. That will never take the relationship forward and the frostiness will increase.

.
I don't think so. What was that recent statement on Kashmir which completely discredited the genuine freedom struggle of Kashmiris?

US only wants temporary good relations to help it extricate itself from Afg and avoid embarrassment, however even we can't do anything if US are too arrogant to compromise with Taliban.

We don't care what "Do More" has to say, we say "No More."

No they are not. US is a hostile country who clearly backs our rival, the secretary of state clearly calls Pakistan's nuclear weapons a threat to US, The relationship can never be good and nobody is a fool to believe otherwise. There is only a working relationship between the two sides for mean to an end to Afghan Occupation by US and allies. Once that is over, Pakistan will have nothing to do with the US. We have moved on.

That prick John Bolton, a right winger by nature called our FM and asked to crack down on JeM.

If US wants to good relationship with Pakistan, it should be neutral. It should not believe Pakistan but ask for evidence from Indians. He did did not. For Americans, Indian and Israeli statements are treated as evidence.

US has been clearly a hostile power in our neighborhood. Under Trump especially it is hostile to everyone even Europeans. So while it looks like its twilight is around the corner, we should weather the storm and let it pass in the history.

Pakistan is realigned towards Chine and that is a very good thing. Pakistan should at the same time improve its internal situation and make its economy stronger and independent of foreign funds. Only then Pakistan will realize its true potential.

As for America, let it be transactional relationship.
