Siemens (SIEGn.DE) may have to share a multi-billion dollar deal with U.S. rival General Electric (GE.N) to improve Iraq’s energy supply system following an intervention by President Donald Trump’s administration, The Financial Times reported on Wednesday.

The U.S. government intervened in favor of GE and put pressure on the Baghdad government, the FT said, citing people familiar with the matter.

Although no decision has been made, Siemens had been the favorite to win the contract to supply 11 gigawatts of power generation equipment to Iraq in a deal reported to be worth around $15 billion.

But the Trump administration reminded the Iraqi government that 7,000 U.S. personnel had died since the 2003 invasion which overthrew Saddam Hussein, the people said.

GE, which has been battling a severe downturn in its power division, is now expected to take a substantial part of the sale, which could be included in its figures when it reports its third-quarter earnings on Oct. 30.

What the f*ck!!

Did Iraq invite USA to fight a war? USA invaded Iraq on a false pretext. In preparation for that illegal war, USA put Iraq under sanctions for 12 years killing millions of Iraqis and depriving even basic medicine. I hope GE does not even get crumbs from this deal. The way to show middle finger to this bully.

If you're sitting on an ocean of black gold worth the world and still don't try your best to acquire nukes and all other deadly weapons to defend that treasure and yourself then you deserve everything that comes your way. This world does not show mercy to the weak and the poor.

They didn't save their guts from the terrorism while their budget was astronomical in our modern history!!

They're just some thieves nothing else

EVen if they can say no they are worried how Trump will act if he hears No from Iraqi govt.

The problem is that we have the KRG inside Iraq which is something an enemy of us can use to cause us great problems on many levels, this obstacle has to be taken out before Iraq can make its own decisions. Retaking Kirkuk was not enough, Arbil and Suleymaniyah have to return. Until then they will be used by the US to pressure Baghdad when they feel like it.

if they say yes now then GE won't do it as good as if they were win it without pressure
Honestly I don't care who does it but not by Force with Force you have the ability to do it any how and that's what worry me

. .
Germany supported the KRG more than anyone else, it's not like there's a difference in Germany and USA when it comes to whom is 'better' for us.

Iraq became the strongest Arab country in the 1970s, with a big professional army.

Iraq commenced its nuclear weapons program under Saddam Hussein in the 1960s with the construction of a 2-megawatt Soviet nuclear reactor called the IRT-5000. Next step was development of Orisak nuclear research and plutonium enrichment complex with assistance of French.

Israel responded with Operation Opera in 1981 to derail Iraqi nuclear weapons program, and it worked.

Iraq shifted its attention to chemical weapons program as an alternative, and established sufficient infrastructure to produce Mustard gas and Sarin nerve agents in the 1980s. Iraq utilized these weapons to expel Iranian troops from Iraqi territory and bring an end to the war.

Iraq also commenced a ballistic missile program in the 1980s with assistance of former USSR, and began to develop them in house; produced Al Hussein SRBM in the 1987. Iraq subjected Iranian cities to numerous ballistic missile strikes (i.e. War of the Cities), and Israel in the Persian Gulf War [1991]. These were accurate enough to strike a military base.

Iraq looked into another means of long-range power projection (Project Babylon). Iraq hired world- renowned artillery expert Gerald V. Bull to develop 3 superguns - each would be capable of subjecting a target to a projectile with 600 kg payload up to 1000 KM in range. A prototype gun was put together but Gerald's assassination in 1990 led to delay in progress, and the project met its end soon after the Persian Gulf War [1991].

Iraq's fortune shifted for the worse after Saddam ordered invasion and subsequent annexation of Kuwait in 1990. Saddam's refusal to pull Iraqi troops from Kuwait on the face of calls from UN, was a major miscalculation on his part.

USA responded with Operation Desert Storm in 1991 to destroy Iraqi military capability (Persian Gulf War, 1991), and subjected Iraq to a lengthy UN-led campaign in order to dismantle its WMD programs.

Valuable lessons for any regional power in this saga.

Environment of corruption, ill-advised geopolitical ambitions and arrogance = bad luck and/or invitation to trouble.

Israel hit Iraq and Iraq just sat there and took it.

Saddam should have punished the hell out of Israelis for doing that. Saddam blinked before the Israelis (Americans) did. The end result would have been the same even if Iraq had never tried to acquire nukes.

That was in the past, the point is to learn lessons from it.
