Troops wonââ¬â¢t be withdrawn from Siachen: Army chief
Friday April 6 2007 13:34 IST
BELGAUM: ââ¬ËIndia would not withdraw its troops from the worldââ¬â¢s highest and most challenging battlefield - Siachenââ¬â¢ said General J J Singh, chief of the Indian Army.
Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Gen Singh said that talks were being carried out as Pakistan wanted India to withdraw its troops from the Glacier, which is India unlikely to agree with.
He said that the Army in Kashmir has neutralised a large number of terrorists and constructed a viable anti infiltration obstacle system to make the infiltration extremely difficult. The General informed that as an upgrading activity, Indian Army is expecting more than 100 choppers in the next 3 to 5 years.
He said that also 124 Arjun tankers are expected out of which 14 tankers will be shortly available for commencing exercises on it. Under the 11th and 12th Financial Commission, expansion of Infantries is expected which includes Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, he added.
Joint exercise is a part of operation of Indian Defence to master different skills and exercises with the troops of other countries. Troops of both the countries get benefited through such operations by sharing their experiences and skills, the General felt.
ââ¬Ë Not only troops from other countries come here for joint exercises, but the Indian troops reach to them for sharing and learning new talents and skillsââ¬â¢ he further added.
