Troops won’t be withdrawn from Siachen: Army chief
Friday April 6 2007 13:34 IST

BELGAUM: ‘India would not withdraw its troops from the world’s highest and most challenging battlefield - Siachen’ said General J J Singh, chief of the Indian Army.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Gen Singh said that talks were being carried out as Pakistan wanted India to withdraw its troops from the Glacier, which is India unlikely to agree with.

He said that the Army in Kashmir has neutralised a large number of terrorists and constructed a viable anti infiltration obstacle system to make the infiltration extremely difficult. The General informed that as an upgrading activity, Indian Army is expecting more than 100 choppers in the next 3 to 5 years.

He said that also 124 Arjun tankers are expected out of which 14 tankers will be shortly available for commencing exercises on it. Under the 11th and 12th Financial Commission, expansion of Infantries is expected which includes Maratha Light Infantry Regiment, he added.

Joint exercise is a part of operation of Indian Defence to master different skills and exercises with the troops of other countries. Troops of both the countries get benefited through such operations by sharing their experiences and skills, the General felt.

‘ Not only troops from other countries come here for joint exercises, but the Indian troops reach to them for sharing and learning new talents and skills’ he further added.

I agree. Lets just get the positions demarcated(as they are warming up to it) and then not make the army leave. lol.

I am all for peace, i am ready to scarifice for it, just one condition i should not be the only one scarificing.
India has already did a big favour for pakistan, by stating it doesnt need to have Azad Kashmir, if Pakistan feels it can push for IoK; it is sadly mistaken, Status Quo would remain unless Pakistan physically overthrow Indian troops/

Indian kashmir is a way or a means to induce instability in India. It gives Pakistan, some sort of cover. Its not about Kashmir. If India has given Kashmir, next you would see that Muslim population in Punjab would grow and they would start providing 'diplomatic' and 'moral' cover to those fighting the Indian aggression in Punjab. So on and so forth.

Right now, the priority should be to make Pakistan sign the verification document on the location of Indian troops.

Demaracation will happen and will give some good respite to the soldiers. India has so dramatically improved its infrastructure and soldier equipment and Other resource management for Siachin, there is NO SINGLE case of death by cold, bullet or anything.

Operation Megdoot was the Indian version of Kargil on Pakistan.

I was actually for this. $1 million per day is the cost for them to stay there. Should cut down on the planes. :D

$365 million/year is peanuts for us.

Indeed, Siachen expenditure is nothing. Plus with the new Heli's comming in, the old Cheetah/Chetak's will be removed which are literally the lifeline of Siachen. The new choppers will ease logistics, be more fuel efficient, carry more load, lowermaintenance costs, etc, etc, etc. In short they will make things MUCH simpler for India. It would be a complete overhaul of the infrastructure there. No reason for us to leave.
