Indian police suspect a large human trafficking network may be involved

Over the past 11 months, Tripura police have arrested 13 Nigerians attempting to cross over into Bangladesh.

The Nigerians were not carrying any legal documents to enter Bangladesh, says South Tripura police, according to The Sentinel Assam.

Tripura police are alarmed by the increase in illegal influx of Nigerians along this channel. Indian police suspect a large human trafficking network may be involved.

Police claim interrogating the Nigerian citizens have not revealed anything about the traffickers. They were found with very little money on them. It remains to be known why these Nigerians were trying to illegally enter Bangladesh.

The Nigerians were attempting to cross over from Belonia in South Tripura into Feni in Bangladesh.

Several Nigerians claimed they were robbed of their possessions by the trafficking syndicate.

The latest arrest was made on May 30. Naochinamore Akene, 30, was detained by South Tripura police. He claimed he was assured safe passage into Bangladesh. Earlier on May 16, Beckenmeo Washington, 37, was arrested.

Both Beckenmeo and Naochinamore claimed they were going to Bangladesh to obtain visa. However, Telengana police offered information that Beckenmeo was a suspect in a gold heist in Hyderabad on April 16, according to the Times of India.

Beckenmeo’s interrogation at Belonia jail by South Tripura police revealed nothing of substance.

Indian law enforcement agencies in the past detained several Nigerians from the border region of Sonamura in Western Tripura which borders Comilla.
