I think that while the actual impact of this within Pakistan may not be significant as far as Civil Mil relations go, it isn't a good thing that the US bypassed the proper channels and went directly to the COAS. Given Pakistan's history of military coups and the continued domestic tensions over the extent of the power & influence of the military, this sends the wrong signals and certainly creates a perception that the elected government is powerless.
Hopefully Bajwa discussed this with the Prime Ministers office and clarified that he didn't solicit the phone calls and sought their direction on how to handle such a situation going forward.
First of all let me ask you if you want a driving license will you go to a doctor to get it. USA was not contacting us to give loan they were contacting us for a military matter so they contacted the relevant office. Now it was a phone call not a diplomatic visit and you can call anyone you just have to dial a number. Give me your number I will call you to explain the process it is very simple. Hope I have helped you. If not I can show you how to make a phone call.
If US CJCSC was calling the Army Chief, it was still understandable. But here, when Pompeo called Gen. Bajwa, ISPR released a press statement, two days later he gets a call from Esper, and there's a press release. In 3 days following Soleimani's assassination, not a single Pakistani civilian representative was contacted by the US, but our Army chief. It sure does sends wrong signal.
What do you think about PM's tweet about sending FM to these countries and asking Gen. Bajwa to get in touch with 'relevant military leaders'?
GHQ is not a policy-making office. Foreign Office and Defence Ministry are. You defending this is equivalent to calling our civilian government powerless.
If their CJCSC contacted our Army Chief, that was fine. How is US Secretary of State making military call and not a diplomatic one?
Your logic is as flawed as your understanding of the issue.
This thread is damage control by patwaris after their beloved leader was yet again found licking boots....
oh shut up and shove your jamhooriat where the sun doesnt shine..Same page doesn't mean that the Civilian Government should face humiliation like this. Why do you have a Foreign Office and a Minister when other countries' Foreign Minister/Secretaries are going to call GHQ?
You are wasting your time, use it at something better. If US CJCSC was calling the Army Chief, it was still understandable. But here, when Pompeo called Gen. Security of state is formed up by collective elements, not by Army only.on security matters the international powers only trust the military, not the civilian government..

Exactly..Supremacy of civilian institutions would remain a dream; unless people of sound character and adequate competence are not elected by the people of Pakistan. As simple as that.
I thought current Govt is made up of people having everything here and on top of that they all are competent as hell.In other countries yes. In Pakistan no..
The proof is in the pudding.
All those ruling Pakistan have their Kids dual citizens and have 90% assets abroad, and spend more time abroad than in Pakistan even when they are in Government.
Stop comparing Pakistan with Europe , as Pakistan is very different.
Exactly..
Currently people of Pakistan elect leaders who have no assets or interest in Pakistan and only come from their palaces abroad to loot Pakistan and go back abroad..
What civil supremacy people are on about?
I think because outside pakistan there is a misconception that army controls everything in Pakistan. In the past it was true but these days it's no longer a reality.Hello,
I don't know how many of you are concerned about this, but I am.
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, whose counterpart is our Foreign Minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi -- directly called GHQ, bypassing the foreign office, and the Prime Minister office and had a conversation with the Army Chief a day after they assassinated the Iranian General.
Two days later, US Secretary of Defence Mark Esper, whose counterpart is our Defence Minister Pervez Khattak, broke protocol and directly opened a line with GHQ and talked to the Army Chief Gen. Bajwa.
Point to note here is, General Bajwa is outranked by at least 3 officials, the CJCSC, the Defence Secretary, and our Defence Minister, at least on paper.
Either, the Americans are upto something they don't trust our civilian Government with, or this is just an attempt to embarrass the Prime Minister and his Government.
At least as a voter, I feel disrespected, imagine what the PM must be feeling about all of this.
His tweet about sending FM to meet representatives of US, Iran and KSA, and Army Chief to get in touch with 'relevant military leaders' shows there's some realisation of this.
What do you all think?
