Top Gun: Maverick: Sequel loses Chinese investor due to pro-U.S. messaging

I watch it last weekend, it was last showing so I got the whole theater for myself.
My review is that it's kinda...mixed. I guess I got too hyped and wish there were more action, don't get me wrong the stuff with Rooster (Goose's son) and Iceman cameo are very well done, but after a decade of watching Macross Plus, Macross Zero and playing Ace Combat, I expect something more grandiose.
The Dark Star supercraft shown in the beginning should be the final boss or something, and JenCon is really so old now, she looks like an old man.
Also, the music wasn't as iconic, yeah you hear Highway to the Danger Zone in the beginning and that was hype, but after that, no more memorable songs, not even Mighty Wings.
Well this isn't the '80s. I was only 3 years old when the first movie came out,but I did get to live and remember the late '80s and besides early '90s was like late '80s as well in Greece.

Back then the music was music, the movies were good, even the cheesy ones, the cartoons were the best ever and the women looked like women. They didn't have a thousand tattoos or piercings or talked about feminism and LGBTQ+ rights.

No wonder retro stuff appeal to the masses again. Because ever since the late 2000s,culture seems to have stagnated. Movies are so bad in the majority, that old classics are being remade. TV series tend to emphasise on dumb plots and boring characters. The music? The music is either about "b*tches" and "money" or noises with no rhythm, lyrics or style.

Don't get me wrong, I do like the movie and think it's better than comic book/woke trash these days.

Just that I see Top Gun 80s, Macross Plus and Macross Zero back to back to build up hype then I can't help to feel that the new movie isn't as good.

Still think the Northman is the better "white man" movie for this year.

. .
TGM is doing very well at the box office, global cum at the end of its second weekend is 548 million, with only a 32% drop which is the lowest ever for any film that made over a 100 million. It could possibly reach a billion by the end of its theatrical run.

This is course makes Ten Cents withdrawal a bad business decision, they've left money on the table. But of course it wasn't a business decision, it was a political one.

White man movie of the year? 🤔 I thought movies weren't divided by color
Oh you know what I mean, white man as protagonist.
Anyway, I'm gonna post about Macross Plus.
I simply can't get it out of my head when I watch the Top Gun sequel. The drone replacing pilot theme and "jets escaping a shitton of AA shot" are ripped straight from there, and the music is much better, oh and the jets can transform into robots since it's Macross.

Jesus, to this day I haven't seen a better dogfight.

Man you had bigger expections because of games etc.

Ace Combat is just a game, there's action all the time,but...ok well there's only action there.

Top Gun's a movie,it's supposed to have more stuff. If it had action like in other movies, then it would have been another "only effects and no plot" Hollywood movie :P

The movie is against Iran armed with Russian 5th Gen plans.
The movie's mission is a bit dumb, Americans would never be at such a disadvantage while attacking Iran, for the foreseeable future. But the action was pure adrenaline.

I still remember the PDF Chinese Brigade saying Hollywood films couldn’t reach a $1B without the Chinese market. That’s been proven wrong twice now.

.
Not really …

Wooden acting by new topgun
Dumb assault and enemy reaction
No magic
The way they stole the Iranian F-14 and used it to shoot down fifth generation fighters would put any Tollywood Rajnikat produced over the top physics/science defying sequence to shame...

Spider-Man: No Way Home

The Battle at Lake Changjin
WORLDWIDE: $902,540,935

Well, to be fair, Hollywood's biggest strength is not quality but marketing. Finding quality is just a numbers game.

Nobody else can compete with the American marketing machine.

There's no big secret in buying advertising time...especially in markets that are not the US.

Maybe the US just has quality marketing compared to others. But you can hire a US marketing firm..US film companies have no monopoly on their usage.

Have you seen the shenanigans that go on with these CCP propaganda films and their over-inflated box office numbers? It's like their covid numbers, or their GDP numbers, it's all about face and trying to prove the superiority of China.

As for foreign films not getting China releases, the China box office is less valuable because the theatres only remit 25% of the gross box office takings to the studio. This is about half of what studios make from North american theatres. And foreign films also have their numbers gamed downwards. The practice of theatres selling tickets for local films in place of foreign films and simply replacing the name on the ticket in pen is very common: the customer gets to watch the foreign film but the box office take is attributed to whatever local film the CCP wants to push.
