Well this isn't the '80s. I was only 3 years old when the first movie came out,but I did get to live and remember the late '80s and besides early '90s was like late '80s as well in Greece.I watch it last weekend, it was last showing so I got the whole theater for myself.
My review is that it's kinda...mixed. I guess I got too hyped and wish there were more action, don't get me wrong the stuff with Rooster (Goose's son) and Iceman cameo are very well done, but after a decade of watching Macross Plus, Macross Zero and playing Ace Combat, I expect something more grandiose.
The Dark Star supercraft shown in the beginning should be the final boss or something, and JenCon is really so old now, she looks like an old man.
Also, the music wasn't as iconic, yeah you hear Highway to the Danger Zone in the beginning and that was hype, but after that, no more memorable songs, not even Mighty Wings.
Back then the music was music, the movies were good, even the cheesy ones, the cartoons were the best ever and the women looked like women. They didn't have a thousand tattoos or piercings or talked about feminism and LGBTQ+ rights.
No wonder retro stuff appeal to the masses again. Because ever since the late 2000s,culture seems to have stagnated. Movies are so bad in the majority, that old classics are being remade. TV series tend to emphasise on dumb plots and boring characters. The music? The music is either about "b*tches" and "money" or noises with no rhythm, lyrics or style.
