Tokyo Olympic 2021: Discussion and Update

Not sure what the Chinese here are boasting about. If you base the medal count on a point system,

Gold-3
Silver-2
Bronze-1

the US has outperformed China to date. Even with a subpar Olympics. And the US still has quite a few gold opportunities to close the gap.

1000 silvers & bronzes does not equal 1 gold. Gold medalist is the champion. Rest are consolation medals for 1st loser and 2nd loser.

In fact I’m in favour of scrapping the bronze medal altogether. Just give silver for runner up for 1st loser position. It is pointless to give a medal for 2nd loser position.

Total golds in Olympics + Paralymics will decide the overall winner of Tokyo 2020.

Comparing medal counts, gold or total, is just another type of size competition. Silly at its best. Medals really matter to competing athletes, not much for those who just watch the games. A fat couch potato is still a fat couch potato after his compatriot wins a gold medal. After a brief excitement, he still has to face his own sorry state.

The stories behind each medal are what is more interesting. Seeing how different people struggle and challenge themselves to excel is truly inspirational. But, watching games is never the same as playing games yourself. The latter brings more benefits to yourself while the former brings more to the companies that buy ads.

Couldn’t disagree more. These athletes spend years if not decades training for this moment and the top 3 should be rightfully recognized, as they always have.

The only reason you say that about gold is because you know China has no chance at winning the overall medal count.

A win is a win, a lose is a lose. Silver and bronze mean you were defeated at least once, all athletes train very hard, if you want to honor silver and bronze, how about the 4th, 5th, 6th...... they all train very hard. when you enter a game, there will be just one winner.
US still has chance to top the gold list, so I m not talking about US, I m talking about sports in general. A second is the same as the last.

What nonsense. If China was ahead in overall and US ahead in gold, I would absolutely say US is topping the table. It’s obvious. Nothing to do with China vs US. That’s why literally every country in the world does it that way.

No one would care if Phelps won 8 bronze medals in 2008. But everyone recognises when he won 8 golds because he won each of those events.

51 bronze medals is NOT a greater achievement than 50 golds medals.

I bet his relatives and friends care if Phelps won 8 bronze medals in 2008. For someone else, whether he cares or not doesn't matter much to Phelps except the potential value in ads.

Look at it as a point system. The US has outperformed the Chinese overall at this Olympics, even with a subpar performance. And the US will likely close the gold medal gap.

That is a very weak argument. The point system you use is one you choose. Others can pick different systems. What Olympic web site uses is a positional system: gold trumps silver, which trumps bronze.

Great match between David Morris Taylor and Yazdani Hassan, a true classic. Well done David for winning gold and Hassan for being such a tough man.

Look out for American wrestling sensation Gable Steveson in the final 125kg with powerhouse PETRIASHVILI Geno.

I don’t care about overall medals. Neither does the rest of the world.

I don’t care about points system. Neither does the world.

Only thing I care about is gold medals. Rest of the world agrees with me.

Speak for yourself, please. Don't drag the rest of the world along. :)

Please calm down, China doesn't need Olympic gold medals to prove itself, and so does the USA.
The Olympic spirit is the most precious.
Uzbek athlete chusovikina, British athlete Adam Miguel, Refugee delegation James shanjack, Syrian athlete Hyde Zaza…
Isn't their spirit and behavior more valuable than a gold medal?
