A religion should be followed out of love & conviction most definitely not fear.

Where did he asked people to fear islam. But asked the madrasa students to bring people to the way of Quran and Hadith. If people have fear of god in them they will not deviate from truth and will not do bad work. That's what he said.

You know the last time a military man (albeit an ex-military man in your case) spoke about Islam in Pakistan...we ended up fighting a war not our own, exponentially increased sectarianism in Pakistan, introduced some seriously regressive laws, helped the radicalization of hundreds of thousands if not millions and still got massively f**ked in the end.
