To Secular Bangladeshis, Textbook Changes Are a Harbinger

Bangladesh should not bow down to the demands of such ultra conservative people. This is a fight for it's secular existence and Bangladesh must win it.
As for educational books, the conservatives don't like Darwin's theory of evolution, they reject it completely. They don't teach it in their Madrassas. The Christian conservatives also don't like Darwin that much.:D
Darwin is not liked by any religious minded people, poor chap.

Hmm u think too much...no sarcasm was intended. I stated the the ground reality in my state. Ur country gives lots of place to hindu writers but besides Jalaluddin and Nazrul not a single Muslim writer is included in bengali textbooks in our state. I wonder why ur country is so accomodating to them. ur country is sometimes more hindu than the hindus themselves. lol.

ki ar bolbo ja khushi kor amar ki
man hasina to indiar chamcha ar ki bolbo... and also on top of that... we are more accepting of other faiths... if we weren't we wouldn't be bangladesh... we would have been "purbo pakistan"

Disagree. The Text books should be reflective of the mindset of common people, socially acceptable norms and values. Forced adoption of anything both Islamism or Secularism ( Which Bangladeshis are not, Bangladeshis are Mostly moderate Muslims neither radically Secular nor Islamist ) would create confusion in the mind of school going kids.

The article from nytimes is one-sided, biased and has a radical secularist agenda. Such as the Example of O for Orna / OL. I have a question of To all Bangladeshi users. How many times you have used the word " Orna " in your everyday life and How many times OL in last 10 years? What is the problem when the most common word Orna replaced the rarely used OL ?

Also the example of Nile , Egypt is another horrible one as It was written by Syed Mujtaba Ali One of the greatest Bengali writers.

The Kath-Mullahs trying to control text books are the brainchild of radical secular bigots. 5-6 years ago The " seculars" silently had a coup against the then perfectly harmonious Bengali text books and removed all the Islamic leaning Chapters

such as the famous Umar Farooq of Kazi Nazrul.

These poems were replaced by poems like this - যে-বই তোমায় দেখায় ভয় সেগুলো কোনো বই-ই নয় সে-বই তুমি পড়বে না। যে-বই তোমায় অন্ধ করে যে-বই তোমায় বন্ধ করে ,সে-বই তুমি ধরবে না by Humayun Azad. Now We all know from Azad's background He is talking about Quran that tries to warn against Hellfire . If any intellectual thinks It shouldnt provoke any reaction from Muslim Majority Society, He or She is living in Denial or fool's paradise.

As for radicalization, The enforced secularism is as much bad or even worse as conservative Islam as seen before in Iran before 1979 or in Communist Afghanistan before 1989. It is as if Secularization served as fuel for Islamic Radicalization because People see it as a defensive mechanism against the Forced Change.

And the 17 changes made are not something new, The books went back to pre 2010 form. I congratulate the Government as they have understood where the fault line is. Sometimes Keeping the disease Dormant instead of removing it is a better solution.

Also The Government is trying to implement Common text books for Madrasa and Schools. Be realistic. You would also bring the similar changes to make it acceptable in Madrasas if you were the chairman.

we are secular. plz dnt bring your jamati crap in it.

Enticing a 1st grader girl to wear orna is sick!
It is good that Govt. forced madrassa to adopt general school textbook, but it would be disastrous to accept Kathmolla logic into national curriculum.Ninety percent student go to general school, not madrassa.Their need should be prioritize. If kathmolla can't accept Hindu writer,boy-girl interaction than they can go to hell,we don't care.

No It is not. Orna is a non religious cloth worn by irrespective of Hindus or Muslims. It is part of our culture at this moment. Would you react like this if you were taught ক তে কোর্তা আনো ? Don't let the radical brigade corrupt your mind.

along with Kathmollahs , Radical Seculars should also be kept out, That is the message.

There is no point in bringing Sharia up, people won't agree with an exact application. Better off keeping the Civil Law and keep the personal laws in tact (for now).

I wasn't bringing shariah up, I was showing the mirror. If This huge number of muslims 82% feel that their religion is threatened , even if 1% of them choose to react, You will destabilize the country. So the Rats that attract the Snakes should be kept in check as well

And so are we supposed to follow through their demands all the time? As time goes on and the more wealthy Bangladesh becomes, people will realize these Mullahs make less sense and less people will see any means to install Sharia.

@Kandari-Hushiyaar bhai, statistics is a whore. It will go to anyones bed, if the owner of the bed knows how to play it.

What you expect a general Muslim to say when asked if he/she supports sharia or not? It was ingrained in the popular mindset by mullahs that not wanting /supporting sharia is "kufri" & against "iman". So you want them to answer no and loose "Iman"? Be a "kafir" or "murtad"? Go to "hell" forever?

Exactly,'Do you support Sharia?' This question is very superficial and not elaborate.Any muslim will say yes as it is an inseparable part of islam. But if the question was 'do you support sharia punishment of beheading, stoning, cutting hand and feet, crucifying, whipping for mandatory veiling, praying etc.?' I don't think 82 percent Bangladeshi muslims would have said yes. That question was like, do you support Islam?Quran?Prayer?Fasting? There is wide gap of understanding about what PEW intended to know and what muslims perceived from their question.

No one's talking about Shariah here u dimwit. Government will try to make laws conform to monotheist guidelines as much as possible. I am no mullah but I sure as heck want any hindu influence booted out of my country which has kept us nothing but backward, uncivilized and unhygienic epitomized by your profile picture which is making me vomit right now. Our government will follow Turkey style of admininistration and legislation that is the only way forward for our country not remaining backward in some hindu cauldron. We will follow the CHRISTIANS not what hindus do. People who want hindu culture to influence our country can go fk themselves. Our country will be influenced by CHRISTIAN CULTURE.

Another fool seems to assume what we have is all Hindu culture. You are making a fool out of yourself. Christian fundamentalism is still a thing, especially here in the US. We need to follow what the seculars did. Westernizing your country does not mean Christianizing it. What you suggests also gets Mullahs to foam in their mouth. Many of the most developed countries of Europe hold a large population that is non religious. Whatever model Bangladesh follows should be without religious bias towards any religion whatsoever.

This subject has generated some intense debate.

I have two requests:

1. Let's debate the points in a civilized manner, without name-calling.
2. Although each one of us have our opinions (including myself), we should respect others' opinions as well.

This is called civilized discourse, we are capable of it in Bangladesh.

One can wear a hizab - and still possess an open mind to 21st century ideas.

We can't simply have prejudice against a person just because they profess to believe in something.
