Mushraff was not a magician..his policies of freezing rates for short term gain created circullar debt. Had he not been departed under american staged elections by force he could have handled the situation better thorough a one time bailout to nullify circular debt once the generation sector became self sustained.

I had read some where in this forum about dams on the Indus. Are these serious plans? How much would they help?

Bhasha dam is to be constructed over Indus and work over the dam will start soon, likely to be at the end of this month. This dam will cost about ~$14-15 billions with a capacity of 4500 MW, largest of the country and the project will probably take 6~8 years to complete that also includes road expansion project of KKH.

Current average deficit of electricity is around 5000MW, which when coupled with 6~8Yrs time of construction, siltation of Tarbela along with other key reservoirs and increase in demand of electricity will increase deficit further up around 10,000MW or even more in 5~8 years time.

Only hrdo electric generation system alone cannot solve this problem, Pakistan immediately needs to devise a method to use its coal reserves to generate electricity by consulting countries such as Germany which have experience of generating electricity from lignite- same type of coal found in Pakistan- that yields upto 30% of their electricity demand.

So the people in charge of managing our resource needs feel it isnt possible to solve the problems? Why are they in charge in the first place? Impossible is nothing, it is their job to make it possible...we have a shortage of energy, instead of working to fix that, it seems these people just sit there coming up with ever more complex schedules of when to shut off power and where.
How can a country survive with such massive load shedding in the urban areas that drive economic success...its so obviously messed up that its amazing that no one seems to be doing anything to fix it.

listen carefully bhai-jan, we have excess generation capacity but most of the plants are running undercapacity because of unreliable supply of fuel.
