To all my Bangladeshi Brothers, I was wondering... if people from other regions of Bangladesh looked down upon the people of Sylhet, do they?

Each region of Bangladesh have an affinity to people from their own region, like a person from Dhaka will prefer a person from Dhaka and often dish others from other regions or a person from Chittagong prefering people from Chittagong etc. I dont think its a case of disliking people from Sylhet, who happen to be one of the most industrious, dynamic, and nationalistic Bangladeshis around.

What I do know is that people of Sylhet have a slightly different dilect of Bangla from people closer to the capital (as does people from Chittagong etc). As a non to very poor speaker of Bangali, its even harder for me to understand what people from Sylhet say :(

Oh I would just add i'm very proud of them, and soon i'll visit molvibazzar :-)

WOW, I didn't expect to get that many messages instantly, just wow and thank you. It's just on numerous other threads I read about how Dhakaites often hates sylhets and I'm sure that's not true, than it leads onto an argument of who's richer, a Sylheti or a Dhakaite.

I was also wondering why the government hasn't done anything for the city of Sylhet, with the right policies it could become a hotbed for investment and become one of the regions most wealthy and prosperous regions.

I also want to pose the question, who do you thinks richer, the average sylheti, or the average dhakaites, or are they fairly similar.

I dont think its a case, people from other parts of BD ever looked down on sylhetis. But many of the cases I have seen Sylhetis want to show themselves different.
One woman from Sylhet was saying, "Im coming from Sylhet to visit Bengal" ( In Sylheti dialect )
In Sylhet if you cant talk in Sylheti dialect often people wont take you seriously.

Personally being sylheti I've never heard anyone differentiate sylhet to the rest of Bangladesh.

@ As per my experience goes in the true sense Sylheti people are not Bengali. Some of the arguments are given below:

1. Sylheti people themselve do not consider them as Bengali. It is said that once one Bengali and one Shlheti went to visit one house of Sylheti. The owner of the house was not present. Once he came to his house at night his wife said, " ek jon Sylheti ichelo ar ek jon Bangali ichilo ".

2. Sylhet language is different from Bengali.

3. Their food habit is different. Specially I have seen during Ramadan at "Ifter" time they prefer to take "Khechori", which is not taken any where in Bangaldesh.

4. Sylheti hardly give their daughter outside greater Sylheti. Similarly the Sylheti boys also prefer to get married within sylhet. This is common, nobody can deny it and that was the main reason why sylhetis are so large in London.

My be they are jealous of us. But who care if so. We Sylotis are majority outside and richest inside bd.

I have seen in India that Hindu Bengalis came after partition to India give utmost importance of region of origin of Bangladesh of fellow East Bengali. They treat the Bengali who is not from same region as alien.

Surprisingly, this trend is not common with WB Bongs. They do not even ask if fellow Bong is from Hooghli or Haorah.

Another thing I noticed that People from other region of Bengal treat Midhnapur district people differently :). They are regarded as intelligent, studious but people keep a distance from them. Do not know why ? :p:

I understand Bengali well. But I failed to understand Sileti in UK. Although I found they can speak normal Bengali too. I found them more aggressive compared to other West/ East Bengalis
