FROM JATIYA SANGSAD: Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni Thursday categorically said it would cost some Tk 440 crore per year if Bangla becomes official language of the United Nations.

The foreign minister came up with the disclosure in the question hour session of the 13th session of the parliament.

In response to query from lawmaker Nasimul Alam Chowdhury, she said, “The country has to bear the total cost if any other does not agree to bear the cost as it would cost some $2500 to translate per page into Bangla.”

The lawmaker told the House that a country has to adopt new mandate through bargaining with other UN member countries if it wants to make its language as UN official language.

The minister again said, “On April 21 in 2010, I requested the Foreign Ministers of several states to support the regulation to make Bangla as UN official language.”

She added: “Except some friend countries, all wanted to know who would finance it and what will be their interest in this regard.”

Dipu Moni said, “Now this is time to think about it and I want to draw attention of the parliament in this regard.”

Tk 440 Cr is a small amount from a country's perspective, we should proceed with it...."Ami Banglai gan gai" :agree: .

.
Great, we should ask India to fund it for us. After all its their language as well. Besides India is dying to extend charities all over the world.

What???
how is Hindi an artificial language???

It was created an promoted by Moghul. Why do want a persian influenced language whereas you have original Sanskrit based Bengali. Bengali is more Indian. ;-)

You should adopt Bengali as the official central govt language instead of Hindi.

Dude its 440 cr per year!!! Which is around $70-$80 mil i guess.

I want bangla to be an UN official language as well, but maybe in the future cos the cost is too high.

Bangla should be one of the official UN languages, hands down,
if you ask me regardless of the hassles. But as the news portrays it's
quite expensive, and whatever the case is, misers in west won't cash
in for this initiative, so it's a tough call.

Let's not discuss about hindi (or other options) in this thread though.

What you are talking about is the "khariboli" dialect of Hindi, it gained prestige in the mughal times and became known as "urdu"..........that's why Hindi and urdu are taken together , for though the script has been influenced by Persian , it's origin remains hindi and the devanagri script
Hindi itself is derived from "sauraseni" the language of mediviel India, which itself is the dialect of Prakrit earlier used in plays and dramas. It is one of the Dramatic Prakrits and was a direct descendant of vedic sanskrit.
Bengali is a "corrupted" descendant of jain prakrit, which itself was a descendant of magadhi prakrit , another dramatic prakrit........

Thus Hindustani has a "elder" descent , as deemed by linguists, than Bengali and has a greater claim to represent the Indo aryan languages.........

Not a problem we will help you as bangladesh is also a part of India before independence.

Even 1 or 2 MPs or some APSs like Suronjit's can afford Tk 440 Cr per year  .

The other six languages didn't become UN official language without a (practical) reason. While it's irrational to speak English in front of an audience who are all Bengalis (that happens quite often), it's as irrational to speak Bangla in front of an audience who don't know Bangla. We should learn to put emotion in its rightful place.

I rather like to see this money goes to human devolopment than UN.

I suggest the fake bangla loving AL to implement Bangla in Bangladesh supreme and high court before UN.
