Hours after his late-night televised address, Prime Minister Imran Khan issued a statement on Wednesday morning urging the nation to refrain from “glorifying money launderers”.

In a post on Twitter, the premier accused these individuals of “seeking refuge behind democracy” and said it was now “time to treat them as criminals”.

The premier was responding to protests held across the country following the arrests of major political personalities including Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) vice-president Hamza Shehbaz and Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) supremo Altaf Hussain.

PM Imran to form ‘high-powered commission’ to probe massive increase in Pakistan’s debt

PM Imran said such elements “have damaged our nation and impoverished our people” and emphasised the need to ensure they receive no special treatment.

“No protocol shd be extended to them. Where are plunderers of public wealth given such special treatment? Time to treat them as criminals,” said the prime minister.

In his address to the nation around Tuesday midnight, PM Imran came down hard on opposition members and announced the formation of a high-powered commission to probe the massive Rs24,000 billion debt piled up in the last 10 years.

The commission would comprise officials of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Intelligence Bureau (IB), Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

“I’m coming after everyone who plundered public wealth,” said the prime minister, warning that under no circumstance would he be “strong-armed” into ending the ongoing accountability drive.

On Tuesday, Hamza Shehbaz, the leader of the opposition in the Punjab Assembly, was taken into custody by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after his pre-arrest bail was rejected by the Lahore High Court in a corruption reference.

Few hours later, MQM founder Altaf Hussain was arrested in London over a 2016 hate speech investigation. A day earlier, former president Asif Zardari was arrested in the mega money laundering case after the Islamabad High Court rejected his pre-arrest bail plea.

The ISI should first investigate why its ex-DG (Lt. Gen. Pasha) took a job with proven corrupt a**holes, the Gulzars. The London High Court recently ruled against them and NAB took one of the brother's in a few months ago too. Pure scum.

.
It's nothing less than a declaration of war against the "enemies of the state" IMO!!! Looks like the Pak State is inching toward a "total & final solution"!!!!! If they become successful it'll be almost like one of its kind in the human political history......

As long as the accountability is for everyone, equally, then it is a good thing. If selective, it will amount to nothing more than political persecution of opponents.

As you said, that remains to be seen. Hence, we must give this present setup its full term in office.

Hello,

Yes, for sure they must be given complete term. It is to people to decide after 5 years when they should vote for but an unhindered acess to govt must be provided

Those who decided on the present set up will also get to decide about the next one to follow.

As I said above, those who decided on the present set up will also get to decide about the next one to follow. That is a simple statement without any hatred involved.

But which party is your favorite

. . .
My guess is any political party which is anti Pakistan or anti Pak army is your favorite
and you would always defend such a party

Your guess is wrong, and pointless. And off topic. And wrong.

Reality has its own way of proving things right or wrong. Let us see what PMIK is able to achieve with this "accountability drive" while the magic of compound interest continues to work in its simple way to add to the national debts.
