NUSAYBİN, Mardin - Doğan News Agency

Three Turkish soldiers were killed when a road mine allegedly laid by members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or PKK, exploded Saturday night.

The attack took place in the Kovancılar area of Nusaybin, a town in the southeastern province of Mardin.

A road mine, presumably placed by PKK members, was remotely detonated as a military vehicle was returning from a routine patrol near the Kovancılar area. Two soldiers were killed at the moment of the blast while a third one was reported dead after being hospitalized.

The killed soldiers were not identified as of Sunday morning, news reports said, adding that a large-scale operation had been initiated to neutralize the attackers.

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
