PESHAWAR: Three senior Taliban commanders were killed on Monday by security forces in the restive Swat valley in northwest Pakistan, official sources said.

The commanders, identified only as Naseebullah, Jaja and Khalid, were killed during an operation in Khwazakhela area of Swat district, the sources said.

All three men were linked to the Qari Abdullah group. They were also allegedly involved in a suicide attack in Mingora, the main city in Swat, two days ago that killed more than a dozen people.

Forces kill ‘mastermind’ of Mingora suicide blast​

MINGORA: Security forces on Monday claimed that the mastermind of Saturday’s suicide attack in the city – that left 17 people dead –had been killed in a clash, official sources said.

After receiving a tip-off from locals of Shamak in Khawazakhela, security forces surrounded a well that the terrorists were using as a safe haven.

“Commander Khalid, the mastermind of Saturday’s suicide attack, was seen in Mingora just days before the attack,” officials told Daily Times, calling his death a major victory for peace in Swat.

The officials said Khalid and three other militant commanders – Fazal Qadir, Naseeb and Izzat were killed in the clash.

“These militants were spotted by local residents, who informed security forces. The forces then launched an operation against the men on Sunday night,” they added.

According to locals, the Taliban used to hide in the well during the day and come out at night to carry out their tasks.
