LAHORE: Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif ordered on Tuesday that a crackdown be launched on those selling forbidden and unhealthy meat.
“Those in the unlawful trade should be put behind bars,” the chief minister told a meeting at Civil Secretariat through video link. Participants of the meeting agreed that sentences for selling carcass meat should be enhanced.
Sharif said those found guilty of selling unwholesome meat would be imprisoned for up to eight years and fined Rs500,000. He approved legislation and amendments to the Animal Slaughter Act to declare the crime a non-bailable offence.
He directed the departments concerned to work in close liaison and take action against those selling unwholesome meat. He said apart from those selling carcass meat, action should be taken against those dealing in adulterated food meat.
“We will not let anyone endanger the lives of people,” the chief minister said. He said the scope of the Punjab Food Authority would be extended across the province.
The meeting approved several measures to improve the condition of slaughterhouses. Sharif ordered that all matters related to slaughterhouses be dealt with by one department or institution. He said a crackdown should be launched on unauthorised slaughterhouses across the province.
“A comprehensive plan should be evolved for the provision of facilities at slaughter houses. Regular inspection of slaughterhouses should be ensured,” he said.
The meeting approved a business model to promote the Livestock and Dairy Development Department. The chief minister favoured compensating the farmers whose cattle had died.
The chief minister ordered that geo-mapping of slaughterhouses across the province be completed within a week. He said that a committee, headed by the chief secretary, should regularly monitor slaughterhouse.
Food Minister Bilal Yasin, Special Assistant to Chief Minister on Livestock Arshad Jutt, MPAs Muhammad Waheed Gul, Muhammad Kashif, Muhammad Naeem Safdar Ansari, the chief secretary and the IGP attended the meeting.
The chief minister said the government was determined to deal with challenges faced by the country. “Pakistan will be steered out of all crises. The nation should unite for the purpose,” he said during a meeting with MPA Ijaz Ali Shah Sherazi, former MNA and Senator Syed Shafqaat Hussain Sherazi and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Thatta vice president Haji Hanif Memon.
Sharif said the government’s policies had helped strengthen the economy.
Sanitation
The chief minister said improvement of the sanitation system in Lahore had yielded positive results.
Speaking at a meeting, he said similar improvements would be introduced in other cities. He stressed the need for providing a clean environment to the people.
