I don't fully trust either Chinese or western media, but what happens on the ground can't lie, if Xinjiang has a large portion of its population being locked up and implemented persecution policies, the region can never develop this fast. The great peace and prosperity Xinjiang achieved in very recent years is self explanatory for its policies.

Of course, so many, and don't take ofr granted that only Uighurs live in Xinjiang, other "Turkic" groups also do, Kazahks and kyrgyzs look exacly like Han due to much less European mixture in their blood, Uighurs only count less than half of the population in Xinjiang.
