I even remember reading somewhere many years back that an Afghan was being prepared to be sent to space. But the Soviet invasion and the later conflicts changed the course of the country.

Not only change the history but it bring back the history... Medieval period was revealed .. Afghanistan was blooming under shah , The influence of Russia was on Afghan society. Russia was co-oprating with Afghans by helping them in making dams,industries,hospital (As they helped India after 1947).

America saw is as an attempt of communism (russian) invasion in middle east. Look what they did with Afghanistan..

charlie wilson, jimmy carter and KSA pumped 30-40 Billion USD (today it will be more than 200 Billion USD) to .. If they would have spent this money for development for , the scenario would have been different,...

Sounds good - but development where?? have you really ever seen or been to Afghanistan?

Don't be fooled by these photographs - Afghanistan is it's countryside, not a couple of streets in Kabul ---- Why did the murderous lunatic Daoud, turn to the Soviet Union? I hope you will think "It's an interesting question" and go find answers for yourself -- You may also want answers as to why the Soviets built up the Khalq and Parcham -- and why these movements found their support in the armed forces and university - and of course why the Ikhwani students and officers developed as well.

Be sober, do research and I don't mean Wiki - do real research - you owe it to yourself.

Just imagine the situation now, where are the schools, universities, libraries, parks, factories, all the infrastructure and many many such things, and most importantly the feeling of security?

Had it not been the Soviets, Afghanistan would have been a different place than what it is now
