If the engine is dirt cheap , how can it be heavy maintenance? Western jet engine has long hours of working life but if it cost 10 times the cost of a short life Russian engine. I do not see any benefit of it.

A fighter jet is only as strong as its radar, missiles, electronic warfare, and RCS. Areas in which western alternatives are better. Speed is not as important as people think.

- The F-15 have better range.

- The MIG-31 is faster.

Most air forces cannot afford dedicated platforms, such as the B-52 or SR-71, so if an air force have to buy its defense, they would have to shop around for the most versatile platform as possible. Speed demons like the MIG-25 and the MIG-31 are not useless, but is your geopolitical situation necessitates getting over your borders as soon as possible? Think about that for a moment. If your country shares multiple borders, and maybe at least one of them is hostile to you, is getting to targets important? So it is not as simple as looking at hardware specs. Another issue is what if the seller does not want to sell, like how the US will not sell the F-22 but is selling the F-35 like ice cream. So how many countries flies the MIG-25/31?

In my opinion, I favor 'jack-of-all-trades' or generalists over specialists. Over time, I can raise the bars for those 'jack-of-all-trades', but specialists are sort of 'locked in' into what they can do. For the MIG-25/31, they are essentially speed demons.

In the early 1990s, the Air Force organized the 366th Fighter Wing out of Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, into the service’s premier “air intervention” composite wing. For roughly a decade, the wing flew fighters, bombers and tankers with the goal of meeting the challenges of a post-Cold War world order — where conflict could arrive anywhere, anytime.​

Basically, the composite wing concept is similar to an aircraft carrier, that a wing would contain the necessary platforms readied to deploy. The wing would have fighters, fighter-bombers, and air refuelers, and all under a unified local commander. Under this concept, the jack-of-all-trades would be well suited. You should understand that the US military is unique in that we are structurally expeditionary, meaning we are essentially overseas players. We do not have a 'home field'. We are perpetually 'VISITORS' on the scoreboard.

I love the F-16. I have the F-16 literally tattoo-ed on my right arm. An expeditionary platform like the F-16 needs to be reliable, not simple, but reliable. A jack-of-all-trades is not a bad thing. The issue is the bars of all those trades. The higher they are, the more versatile and lethal the air force. When I was on the F-111 and stationed at RAF Upper Heyford, I learned a few things about the SR-71 detachment at RAF Mildenhall. The SR-71 is a niche platform and everything needed to maintain it was expensive and time consuming. The photo intelligence from the SR-71 was so valuable that essentially, every US president was its patron, and whatever logistics the SR-71 needed, there was a tacit understanding that the current US president would be behind that need. When you look at the history of the A-4, A-7, F-4, F-15, and so on, each of them got bombs strapped on to it at one time or another, even the F-14 was experimented with bombs. So my preference for jack-off-all-trades are not unique.
