I work for an international organisation. Until a few years ago, China used to be our biggest client. It was exactly this sort of thing that made China the most dreaded posting for all international staff. People who had no designs whatsoever against China, and were only there to help (provide development assistance on the request of the Chinese government), were harassed for absolutely no good reason. One of my colleagues had the police visit her house repeatedly because her 12 year old daughter wore a poppy on her coat to an international school on US Memorial Day.

I have the greatest respect for the incredible economic progress China has made, but it's a wonder that there isn't more civil society activism on personal freedoms.
