MOSCOW, May 20. /ITAR-TASS/. Plane makers in Russia and China have confirmed plans to build a 400-seat, wide-body, long-range passenger aircraft. It will be the first in a family of airliners to be built on a modular design basis.

Industry leaders signed a memorandum in the Chinese city of Shanghai on Tuesday, according to an announcement by the Russian side. The deal will pit the new airliner against Europe's Airbus and Boeing of the US as rivals in the sky.

Russian United Aircraft Corporation president Mikhail Pogosyan and Jin Zhuanglong, chairman of China's Commercial Aircraft Corporation COMAC, launched the initiative, which promises a feasibility study for delivery to respective governments in the summer.

Agreement is the result of two years' joint work by Russian and Chinese experts, said Russia's Pogosyan. "Joint efforts which COMAC and the United Aircraft Corporation are taking to produce jointly a family of wide-body airliners is bringing co-operation between the two countries in aircraft building to an essentially new level.”

The programme is expected to become one of the largest-scale projects of international co-operation in airliner construction and high technology. “The airliner can account for substantial shares on the markets of Russia, China and third countries,” the Russian corporation's press service said.

Plans are already advanced, the partners say, discussing the joint venture's structure and design options for the new transport.

i am surprised how this is overlooked by mainstream media

Unlike the gas deal, which involves only China-Russia, selling the plane to third countries will be tremendously difficult. The US & EU will definately leverage on their political & economical might to destroy any deals going through.

But I agree with you, this Sino-Russian collaboration will have far reaching consequences across the global airline industry.

by that time the plane will be completed China and Russia will probably be powerful enough to handle that

You will be surprised how much orders you will get. US and EU firms are skimming too much profit as there is no competition. China and Russia should break this lobby to make passenger planes more affordable.

Emirates wants Airbus to revamp the A380
CCO Antinori says airline plans to replace smaller plane with A380 on Moscow route

Emirates airline would be interested in buying more A380s from Airbus if the plane-maker brought a revamped version of the superjumbo onto the market, much like it has done with its A320neo, an executive told Reuters.

Airbus head Fabrice Bregier said on Monday that the A380 would have to evolve in order to meet the challenges presented by Boeing's rival 777x jetliner, but he did not provide further details.

“We can just encourage Airbus to continue and speed up the possible improvements, especially the fuel efficiency and a Neo version,” Emirates Chief Commercial officer Thierry Antinori told Reuters at the Berlin ILA Airshow on Tuesday.

“If the Neo version is coming we could consider ordering more planes,” he said, without specifying how many the airline, already the A380s largest customer, could be interested in.

A surprise order for 50 more of the planes from Emirates at the Dubai air show in November effectively pulled the programme back from the brink after sales failed to match up to initial projections.

Antinori, speaking to Reuters on board a brand new A380 picked up from Hamburg on Monday, also said the airline was well financed this year and did not currently intend to place any bonds in the market.

He said the airline had reduced services to Ukraine due to the crisis there as fewer people were flying to Kiev.

Demand remained strong in Russia, however, and the airline expected to go ahead with plans this summer to replace a smaller plane with an A380 on one of its twice-daily flights to Moscow from Dubai.
