Apple and Samsung are struggling to remain competitive in the Chinese smartphone market as local players continue to dominate. According to data from CounterPoint Research, the smartphone market in China grew by 3% between April and June 2017.

As we see in this chart from Statista, Chinese brands like Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi expanded their dominance and now account for 87% of the market. Samsung and Apple both lost ground.

The big winner continues to be Huawei, which saw demand for its Nova and P10 models continue to grow. The big loser is Samsung, which saw its share of the market trimmed to 3%. The battery issues with Samsung's Galaxy 7 damaged the company's reputation, and its mid tier phones faced tough competition from Chinese brands.

I am waiting for the moment Apple go for bankruptcy. Most, if not all the tech for Apple hardware come from China, Korea and Taiwan, but they talk as if they make all innovations and China is just copier.

.
Chinese brands are cheap while Apple is costly. In India, someone who cannot afford Apple and Samsung go for Chinese brands

Nope.
Once Chinese loved Apple and many people bought them. You can't say they can afford it before, but can't afford it now. BTW,Huawei's flagship products are more expensive than Apple's.
So our case is quite different with India.

Once Sun,Motorola,Nokia, HTC were all the best companies. For IT industry, you must work hard to survive.
Once Huawei was just a little company, and now it's the No.1 in telecommunication induerstry, who knows what will happens to Apple in the coming years?

As long as the quality is good, making things cheaper is not something shameful. On the contrary, it's admirable.
It involves two factors: intelligence and diligence. Now you can understand why made-in-India are either rubbish in quality or damn expensive even though with lower salaries.

Before the present phone market, previously it was not as crowded...hence the competition for Apple was not there. Second, if you look at the Chinese phone market...the biggest segment is middle of the phone price range.

If you ask anyone...even today...even in west...IPhone indicate a certain social status that is not associated with any of Chinese phones.

In India...made in China is associated with fake and cheap products that don't last long, while made in India is associated with durability even if it is perceived not to be technologically advanced.

Most Chinese come to realize the domestic products have a better price/performance ratio than Apple/SAMG. Also, the quanlity is also very good. It's the trend.
True.
In the meantime, extremely cheap Indian low quality phones (less then 100 dollars) are shrinking in their own market (though using Chinese components).

BTW, China's middle-end One Plus is considered high-end premium phone in India.

I agree with your first paragraph. But the poinit here: that graphics tell us, our people are giving up Apple/SAMG to domestic brank.
And for the seondary paragraph, not any more. If everybody has the Apple, it will indicate nothing at all. Personally, I think only the poor people will buy a Apple for that purpose. See, Huawei, is the new one, if you insist we should have such a brand.

50+% market rate of Chinese brands.
It only leaves very small room for india's own brands in <100 dollars.
VIVO and OPPO are very strong in $200-400 range.

The influx of Chinese smartphones seems to be growing steadily in India. As per International Data Corporation's (IDC) Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, 27 million smartphones were shipped in India in the first quarter of CY2017 with a 14.8% growth over the same period last year.

In the first quarter, Chinese smartphones held 51.4% share of smartphone shipments in India with a growth of a whopping 142.6% growth year-on-year. On the contrary, share of homegrown smartphones dropped to 13.5% in the first quarter of this year from 40.5% last year.

The single winner here was Chinese major Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4. It was the most shipped smartphone in India as against Samsung J2 in the quarter before that.

The Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report has also spotted some trends in India, like the average selling price of smartphones has increased from $131 in Q1 2016 to $155 in Q1 2017. The mass segment, which was earlier below $100 has now moved to the range of $100-$200 in India. Nearly half of the smartphone shipments in Q1 2017 were from this price range.

With most networks moving to 4G, 94.5% of smartphones shipped in the first quarter were 4G-enabled, with Chinese smartphones leading the race here as well.

Camera quality in most phones has also increased over time. As per the IDC report, five out of 10 smartphones shipped in Q1 had a rear camera with 13 megapixel or more.

“Though homegrown vendors are making attempts to recapture the lost ground with new launches in sub-US$100 as well as in the mid-range segment. But intense competition from China-based vendors continues to be a major challenge and is expected to increase in coming quarters” says Jaipal Singh , Market Analyst, client devices, IDC India.

But he added that recovery of homegrown vendor is necessary for Indian smartphone market not only to fill the vacuum created for last few quarters but also to fuel the feature phone to smartphone migration in the country.
