Yeah that's fcuked up . but these people do know what field of study pays and which ones are useless? I just too a Continuing Education class that has a 1 hour class on student loans. I had no value as to the actual data , figures and circumstances til I took the class. One of the clients that this company was dealing with had over 100K in dbt and she ( the instructor) said that she didn't even wanna tell us what field of study that debt pertained to as we would all probably laughing about it.
Its sad to see even otherwise that most of the population has no savings whatsoever, are house poor and one paycheck away from being homeless. I used to service mortgages so I got to see the everyday reality of most Americans and it was pretty bad. It seems like it has not changed much. Folks like myself ( immigrants) always seem to do better in life mainly because we do not overindulge and waste money.

The real problem is tuition isn't scaled for the type of degree you get and many people apply to expensive colleges without even knowing what they want to do. They then dramatically under utilize what they are paying for.

For instance Boston University's tuition is $50K/yr. You'll pay that if you major in engineering or basket weaving. If you are going to fork over that sum you are out of your mind getting a useless degree that will never get you a good job...but thousands do that all the time.

This all goes back to something I have harped upon in past threads on PDF - the ban of IQ tests for job applicants by the Supreme Court around ~1970 due to "unfairness to minorities". This judgement started this whole college spiral mess.

It used to be that colleges were only for smart people who wanted advanced knowledge. When companies were forced to dump IQ tests they then required people to have degrees proving they weren't complete morons (which basically made the situation far worse for poor minorities BTW). Now the colleges hit the jackpot with people almost required to go. They offered more dumbed down Liberal Arts degrees so people could get their resume on an employer's desk. They built sports stadiums and super dorms to get these people to choose their college. Then they hiked tuition to pay for all this fluff. The whole thing is ridiculous.

Short-sighted Liberals who think they are doing minorities and the country a favor. The only thing it accomplished was widening the income gap of poor minorities by excluding them from working in corporate America. It has been rare to see a black or Hispanic person in the companies I have worked for.

Although admittedly I haven’t run across many idiots so this degree requirement has some pros.

Can’t say I have and I had to google it.

I’m sure there is always somebody in a desperate situation.

Although you shouldn’t take things at face value. I remember flying up to Montreal with some friends in the early 1990’s and this hooker approaches us saying “help a girl pay her way through college”. Now she did not look like college material and the tuition cost of college in Canada is laughable. We just sort of cracked up considering my friend went to Boston University and that was probably 20 times the cost of any Canadian education. I bet our hotel rooms and airfare were more than Canadian University tuition.

Student debt is not personal failure.

When so many people "make a bad decision" to the tune of $2 trillion then it's a failure of the system. If an intersection has 10x higher crash rates than others, is it the traffic engineer's problem or is it the driver's problem?

US millenials are worth less now than any previous generation.

They're also the most highly educated. Clearly, education no longer correlates with earning potential. A millenial college graduate is afforded only the same opportunities that a boomer high school graduate is.

Today, the average American cannot even afford a $500 dollar emergency expense.

There are always lazy losers complaining about stuff that they can easily tackle but can't due to their character flaws.

Here's another sad extreme in Pakistan. If you belong to a poor family and you don't have the brains of Einstein to be the top 1% getting into government colleges, you will be illiterate and forced to do menial labour from a very young age.

There's no concept of loans for students, the banks don't give loans if you're not already rich.

And even if you get the education, you're bound to be jobless anyway since the unemployment ratio in country is at all time high.
