I don't have a stake in this, because I'm Chinese born and raised. I just find it distasteful that he had such a low opinion of Chinese culture that he basically wiped it out and replaced it with 1950's British culture. The only reason he started promoting Mandarin again was because China was getting strong, not because he thought Chinese had any intrinsic value. it is almost as sad as how South Asian languages are getting replaced by English. Maybe you 3rd worlders want to emulate him, but we don't.

There was nothing much Singapore could do when the way to survive was to receive investments from foreign companies. Instead of looking at in an emotional angle, try to have a logical opinion. It was a regional hub where different ethnic group lived and different languages were spoken while at the same time in its early stage, race riots were rampant in the country. He tried to forge a common identity for the entire country and because English is considered as the international language, he used it and promoted it to provide a sense of equality among all of its citizens.

Majorities in all democratic countries feel the same way, in India Hindus feel that the previous governments consistently discriminated against Hindus, in the US the tea party movement is in large part a backlash by whites against what they feel is their reducing cultural power. Democracy does bend over backwards for minorities that is true in Britain, or India or the US or Singapore. It is nothing whatsoever to do with the superiority or otherwise of Chinese Singaporeans.

It clearly states that non grads did not have trouble finding a partner. Given that it's a targeted social development for working females.
The govt has done so much for the poor. When I was in ICU for my child with my first wife, there was a poor Indian origin Muslim whose baby has a hole in heart. He was a easier in a bar in boat quarry. He approached the govt and they sponsored the whole operation.
