What's new

The West is not coming to Australia’s rescue. We need new alliances (Australian Lowy Institute International Security Program Director)

A morbid predicament for them, if so.

A UK is a tiny island, with overpriced fish, and chips, soon coming desi PM, and 4 nuke subs on constant port calls to fix them.

At most, UK can deploy 100 thousand frontline troops + at most 50-70 thousand territorials, if they will ever decide to deploy territorials abroad for the first time since WW2.

100 thousand troops force is though nothing to sneeze at, but is microscopic by SE Asia standards. Even tiny Thailand can field this much as complete peanuts.

China just needs most of SE-Asia to stay neutral to keep roasting Australians. That would've been much harder to do if not for Australians alienating all of their immediate neighbours except for NZ.

you clearly have no clue about UK nuclear submarines, we dont have 4

UK has 7 x Hunter Killers SSN the Astute Class

plus 4 x SSBN the Vanguard Class

Total = 11

they are building 4 x Dreadnaught Class to replace the 4 Vanguard class

UK nuclear submarines force is one of the most sophisticated, advanced and globally most deployed fleet in the world with a readiness which beats the USN

Astute Class has outperformed the USN Virginia Class in exercises

which is why UK can send a SSN all the way to the South China Sea yet China which has over 60 subs cant send one to the English channel

Indonesia and Australia announced on Thursday that they would expand military cooperation, including in education exchanges, and also bolster counterterror cooperation, as the two nations seek to deepen their security links amid an increasingly challenging Indo-Pacific environment.

Foreign and defense ministers of the two countries met for their first in-person meeting since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, amid increased security risks brought about by the flaring conflict in Myanmar and contentious developments in Afghanistan.

Indonesia was the first leg of a four-country Indo-Pacific tour by Australian Foreign Minister Marise Payne and Defense Minister Peter Dutton, who are due to visit India, South Korea and the United States after concluding their two-plus-two talks in Jakarta.

So are they actually thinking that China will ignore Taiwan,South Korea,Philippines,Japan,Vietnam,Indonesia,Malaysia,Thailand...whatever and go straight to Australia? Or did they just wake up and said "Wait a minute,we could have a bigger army, why are we not buying more weapons?" I'm sure the Americans started asking them to get in the "alliance" to pressure the Chinese even more or maybe give the Americans bases in Australia against the Chinese.

Given how much Australia alienated all of countries above, not far fetched.

I seriously doubt China would attack Australia. It's like a country in its own world somehow. The problem is the Americans and the British are trying to make them go on the offense.

Attack? Of course not. Troll them in the Sea of Timor to the end of times? Oh yes, Xi will.

Another eye-opening editorial.
Excerpt from the article:
"We are led to believe that the Quad is a grouping of countries joined together with shared values. Values of democratic principles and pluralism; a beacon of humanism that will provide a stark contrast to China’s oppressive single party system. Let’s table for a minute at the irony that the US has chosen as its partners, countries responsible for serious historical and contemporary misdeeds."
