By the time Washington can react and mobilize, it'll already be over. What the general says is completely on theoretical terms as in US forces would be deployed and ready before any invasion.

You got it wrong, the US and NATO understands it completely. Zelensky was convinced the US and NATO would back him up in confronting the Russian forces if Ukraine attacks the Donbass. Blinken rushed over there to deliver Biden's message to him that they ain't going to war with Russia. The same is true for Taiwan, US knows it will suffer tremendous loses (losing all those warships and bases in South Korea/Japan). You cannot compare the Afghan War or that in Iraq. A war amongst superpowers is totally different where China's land based missiles combined with the Naval and Airforce will be flying with devastating power into the Sea battlefield.
