What's new

The United States needs air power, but it does not need an air force.

The words 'air power' denote the aggregate combat air resources of the entire military. The words 'air force' denote a distinct and equal branch of military service whose main mission is to provide combat air power. What the article is saying is that the US military can do just fine without the USAF regarding air power. Back in Desert Storm, the overall commander was General Norman Schwarzkopf, US Army. The air component commander was General Charles Horner, USAF.

What the article said is problematic. Air power, as a principle and component of war, could not have developed to the sophistication it is today had it been continued to be subservient to ground commanders. History is filled with doubts about the efficacy of air power to bring down an opposing army, or at least delay advances. Who can forget the story of how Billy Mitchell, considered the father of US air power, proved the admirals wrong?

Yes, the most desirable objective of any war is ground control, if not possession, and only ground troops, aka 'The Army', can do that, and air power must be subordinated to this goal. Even this Air Force guy here can admit that. But air power have also proved that this standalone component managed to seriously deterred a war that could have been of global devastating proportion and reduced it to the largely manageable 'Cold War'.

US air power is unchallengeable at this time and the USAF led the way to that status. It should remain in existence, at least for another century, to show impudent fools that we can smack them down with barely batting a national eye. :enjoy:

Total delusions of grandeur old man. How is it so difficult for Americans to see that their total supremacy in the air is what leads to resentment and helplessness in the people they bomb? You wipe out entire families and communities from a safe and impersonal cockpit only to create even more enemies with nothing to lose.
Go on bragging about smacking down impudent fools, the rest of the world can only shake their heads at the strutting rooster that is America or rather the violent sadistic policeman who goes home to act like a normal decent person.

So say a member of the crew who can barely tell the difference between a screwdriver and a hammer and yet posts on a military oriented forum.

And what has your PLAAF accomplished other than an agile jet fighter collided with a lumbering four engine prop jobber that killed your pilot?

Please quote me on on when I bragged about the potency of the Chinese air force. I have always been of the opinion of the US airforce is by far the strongest, a sentiment you seem to mention as often as you mention your ah, advanced age.

You bet.

Distortion of history will get you nowhere, little boy.

Your PLAAF made a mockery out of itself with the Hainan Incident. Professionals everywhere still laughs at the PLAAF.

Whats worse than the Hainan incident is that a PLAAF who had practically no flying experience made one helluva mockery of the so called unchallengeable American airforce in the Korean War.

Basically a noob PLAAF embarrassed the experienced USAF. The Hainan incident just proves my point. As inexperienced as our pilots are, they still whooped the American pilots 5 kills to 1 loss.
Hows that for a slap down.

Not only did Serbia prove the pathetic nature of American aircraft shooting down the 'stealth' F-117, our pilots proved how incompetent American pilots are too.

5-1 kill ratio is a stain on the USAF. It just shows you can spend billions buying weapons but you can never buy a victory.

We achieved a 5 to 1 kill ratio over the USAF in the Korean war.

Wang Wei was an experienced pilot but a foolish one. He died.

In Korea, Chinese fighters were flown by Soviet pilots.

Soviet Union in the Korean War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soviet pilots wore Chinese uniforms when flying, whilst rules were prescribed to stop Sovet pilots flying near the coast or front lines (where they might be captured if shot down) and from speaking Russian on the aircraft radio. All aircraft flown carried Chinese or North Korean markings.[10] When not flying, for reasons of ethnicity, on the ground Soviet pilots 'played' the roles of Soviet commercial travellers rather than Chinese or North Korean soldiers.
Real history, not 'Chinese history'.

And how are you going to invade them (America), with what?
With their Thunders and Al Khalids, with a couple of Nodongs..err...Ghauris thrown in! I thought you knew? :laughcry:

But seriously, a conventional Air Force would be passe in the future. The new kid on the block would be an Unmanned Combat Drone Force which would be 50% cheaper to build and maintain. This would become reality by the middle of this century.

More and more drones

Drones are good enough to replace pilots

Everyone always forget about the coast guard. lol
Wow, the Chinks shot down our whole air force and yet we still stare at them across that border? Their ground troops must be poorly trained cowards to throw that advantage away.

There also is the Air National Guard.

Even without the USAF, the air power US has right now is one of the most formidable air force in the world if not THE most.

what the writer means is completely sane, his assertion that bureaucratic walls cause a decline in war time efficancy because it has to move down a greater chain of command is a correct one especially in todays warfare in chich every decision needs to be made and executed instantly, this problem was especially prevalent in the war Pakistan fought....

Not hard: JEW USA rely on massive air force

It needs time to make plans to terrorize people with their drones or their jets

If we rush them, they can't do anything

See that? This proved that even 12 yr olds are smart enough to realize at least the technical, if not philosophical, necessity of an independent air force. Sometimes babes do speak truth.
You are clowns, the day that mexican Ms13 freedom fighters realize that if they rush you, you can't don anything, you're all dead

Still got the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps to contend with. They have their own aircraft.
Muwahaha you talk about the pussies terrorists who can't do anything without JDAMS?

What about US missile technology, submarines, destroyers,ACs etc..?
You DO know that all of the world powers combined cant defeat the US,even without airpower?
If you think otherwise,explain how.
