The United States has suspended duty-free trade with three African countries, Ethiopia, Mali and Guinea, for alleged human rights abuses.

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced the decision in a statement on Saturday, local time.
It said the three countries had been removed from the list for violating trade facilitation conditions under the African Growth and Opportunity Act.

Under the African Growth and Opportunity Act, the United States facilitates duty-free trade on exports to sub-Saharan African countries. That is why some conditions have to be met regarding the political environment and the human rights situation.

The statement added: "The Biden-Harris administration is deeply concerned about the unconstitutional change of government in Guinea and Mali and the internationally recognized human rights violations in the conflict in northern Ethiopia."

The embassies of the three countries in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

President Joe Biden said last November that Ethiopia's duty-free trade could be revoked due to human rights violations in the Tigris region. In the wake of the recent military coup, the same steps could be taken in the case of Mali and Guinea.

The move by the United States will hit Ethiopia's textile industry, which makes clothing for several international fashion brands.

President Joe Biden's administration announced on Saturday that it had excluded Ethiopia, Mali and Guinea from a US-Africa trade agreement, saying the actions of the three governments violated its principles.

"The United States Sunday terminated Ethiopia, Mali and Guinea from the AGOA trade preference program due to actions taken by each of their governments in violation of the AGOA Statute," the US Trade Representative (USTR) said in a statement.

The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was put in place in 2000 under the administration of former president Bill Clinton to facilitate and regulate trade between the United States and Africa.

But the United States is "deeply concerned by the unconstitutional change in governments in both Guinea and Mali," the statement said.

It also voiced concern about "gross violations of internationally recognized human rights being perpetrated by the government of Ethiopia and other parties amid the widening conflict in northern Ethiopia."

"Each country has clear benchmarks for a pathway toward reinstatement and the administration will work with their governments to achieve that objective," the USTR said.

Under the AGOA agreement, thousands of African products can benefit from reduced import taxes, subject to conditions being met regarding human rights, good governance and worker protection, as well as not applying a customs ban on American products on their territory.

By 2020, 38 countries were eligible for AGOA, according to the USTR website. The agreement was modernized in 2015 by the US Congress, which also extended the programme until 2025.

This is an EEZ dispute, does not mean a territorial dispute. In the SEA, every country has dispute with one or another. Why single out China? It is Indonesia which habitually blow up Vietnamese vessels.

This is a whole region problem.

This paragraph says why America took trade actions against three countries of Africa. BD is so far lucky that America has not yet imposed trade sanctions against it.

Unless BD improves the human rights situation, this country may face worse trade sanctions from America as well as EU countries.
