The Truth behind this guy's efforts to give money to Pakistan.

What is the truth behind Gandhi going on a fast to give money to Pakistan?

Why did the Mahatma go on a fast to give money to Pakistan? What is the truth behind the matter?

1. What was the money all about:
As the Government of India in British days was considered a different entity than the Government of UK, different accounts were kept for both. During the Second World War, Govt of India has supplied a large amount of resources to the Allied War Effort in terms of manpower (Soldiers and fighters), Food, equipment, shipping, use of its ports etc. As the Govt in London was unable to pay for all this during the time of War (Because it was practically bankrupt), it was all written in accounts as debts payable to Govt of India in future, called the Sterling Debt.

2. Where did Pakistan's share come from:
As soon as War ended, India became independent. When the assets were being divided, there was this formula that around 17.5% of all assets would go to Pakistan, later revised to 20% to Pakistan, and rest to India. Same was applied to Sterling Debt.

3. The Problem in Payments: The responsibility of handling these payments to both India and Pakistan lay with Reserve Bank of India, for most of 47-48. When Pakistan attacked Kashmir, the Govt of India decided that it would withhold the Sterling payments to Pakistan, unless it withdrew from Kashmir. This led a lot of bad blood, because there were already some misunderstandings and misgivings. India had inherited almost all of the major institutional infrastructure from the British days, including most of the Railways, Civil Services, Army, foreign Embassies and High Commissions outside India, even the United Nations seat, leaving Pakistan with almost nothing. Add to that the irregularities in distribution of the assets of the Govt under the said formule -- according to one report, three trains full of military hardware which started from UP for Pakistan never reached there, the official response of Indian Govt being that the trains have gone "missing". This made the Pakistani Govt feel that Indians have not accepted Pakistan as a truth, and want to kill the newborn state.

4. Mahatma's Interventions: After coming from Bengal, where he was the "One-Man-Army" against communal fanaticism, and after overseeing a peaceful partition in Bengal, he wanted to travel to Punjab and Pakistan, to help the govt in maintaining order. He stayed In Delhi for some time, and at that time, he said, that he cannot proceed to Pakistan to ask for their help and expect their cooperation, if his own Indian Government was being unfair to the Pakistani people. He, hence, started fast on two conditions : 1. That the Muslims of Delhi be allowed to live in peace, and their property and life be protected, and 2. That the Govt of India deliver the Sterling Debt due to Govt of Pakistan. He said, that if these conditions are fulfilled, then only he can go to Pakistan, and reason with the people there for peace. These conditions were met, but before he could leave Delhi, the Mahatma was shot dead.

My question is did Britain repay the debt in reality? I am personally surprised because of two reason:

1. I thought British were racist who indulged in tyranny and destruction in India. So they wouldn't care to clear this debt.

2. I thought Britain's own economy was in trouble after WW2. So where did they get the money to clear the accounts?

4 wars since partition and so many smaller conflicts . A lot of money and effort wasted in keeping large armies. Unfortunate that Pakistan didnt have a mature person at the helm after Jinnahs death. Maybe the 2 countries could have had a different relationship. Now i dont see a very optimestic future for our relations with the army in control in Pakistan. Going to go even more downhill.

Yes every thing was done by Pakistan..the Evil Pakistani's..
Try Self Actualization for once atleast..

And that's why we say the Brits basically gift wrapped a new country to Indians, Pakistanis on the other hand had to start from the scratch. Indians should forever be grateful to Brits.
