The slaughter of cows is banned in large parts of India but the country exports more beef than any other nation.
Here are the numbers that help explain the contradiction.

  • 301.6 MILLION
The estimated number of cattle (oxen and the Indian humped variety of cows) and water buffalo in India in 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service.
  • 4.5 MILLION TONS
Estimate of the weight of the water buffalo meat and beef that will be produced in India in 2016, an increase of 5% from a year earlier.
  • 37%
The proportion of buffalo meat produced by Uttar Pradesh in 2015, the highest share of any state. India produced 43% of the world’s buffalo meat in 2015, the highest of any nation.
  • 2.3 MILLION TONS
The weight of beef and water buffalo estimated will be consumed in 2016 in India, up from 2.2 million tons in 2015. The USDA estimates that population growth will drive demand and said that because of its affordability, water buffalo is the second-most consumed animal protein after chicken meat in India.
  • 2.2 MILLION TONS
The amount of water buffalo expected to be exported from India in 2016, up from 2.1 million in 2015. The increase is due to rising demand from the Middle East, Africa and Southeast Asia.
Vietnam and Malaysia are the largest export markets for India, according to the USDA.
  • 62 MILLION
Cattle artificially inseminated in 2015, three times the number the year before and adding 18 million to the livestock population.
