Defence minister A.K. Antony recently completed seven years as defence minister but did not want his achievements to be highlighted. Mr Antony is already India’s longest-serving defence minister with a continuous tenure. While India has achieved several milestones during Mr Antony’s tenure, such as the spectacular success of the 5,000 km range Agni-V Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM),
several crucial defence deals are yet to be inked such as the 126 combat aircraft (MMRCA) deal for the IAF, the deal for acquisition of 197 light-utility helicopters for the Army and IAF, and the deal for acquisition of over 140 ultra-light howitzers for the Indian Army from the United States.
Incidentally, there are less than seven months to go for the term of the current UPA-2 government to be completed. While some in the ministry of defence (MoD) wanted the achievements of Mr Antony to be highlighted in the media, Mr Antony himself shot down the idea.
