The problem of Stray Dogs & Cats in South Asia

I don't know man. Ive heard of dogs and cats coexisting. But we have a large compound. And my dogs are always let loose outside to guard it. They are big and territorial and not house dogs.

They will kill the cats we feed if they fall into their strike range.
Doc, the desi dogs will give up their lives to protect their territory (our home). My experience says that you got to socialize them with the cats and kittens of varying age, and they will get along together.

Having said that, no outside cats dare to enter our compound.

.
A cat very very very rarely gets cornered. And even when cornered, is well able to face off with a dog momentarily before it gives him the slip. I think youve never lived in a dog and cat mixed household like I have.

I get your logic but there is also this fact. I have learned over the years that when dogs see a cat they emit certain sounds depending on situations like whether they see a cat behind a house gate or whether they see the cat down the road or whether the cat has run up a tree. Such situations. And these sounds are heard by other street dogs and they unite in hunting down this cat. This is all instinctive as you point out.

The problem in India now is that almost every street has two to five dogs so a being-hunted cat many is times unable to escape by cross the street to jump into another compound or into a roadside gutter or climb up a tree. The dogs in that street will have heard those sounds of the other dogs who have originally seen the cat. And all these dogs together will hunt down the cat. This is how the cat is almost extinct in urban India.

And no. Dogs do not kill cats for humans alone.

Sorry about that. I typed "human" by mistake I had meant to type "fun". But I agree with you. It is part fun and and part ancient vendetta.

They kill cats because they are hardwired to recognizing cats as the killers of their pups, and themselves.

Have you seen videos of leopards pulling dogs from apartment complexes in Mumbai?

Yes, I have seen such vids.

But the thing is, if we can decide to save pandas, penguins and gorillas why can't we decide to save the smaller cats. You too agree that street dogs need to be culled.

Hello!

I NEVER said street doggies need to be culled.

Me and you will be butchered first by my wife. Then if anything is left, by my kids.

I said "feral packs" ... the kinds that live on the outskirts and go rogue. Carrying away little kids. They hunt like wild dogs. They are not domestics any longer.

You are simply too ignorant about dogs man, no offense.

No, I am not ignorant about dogs at all. For example, I wrote about some of their sounds earlier. :)

The 35+ million non-pet dogs in India are not these feral dogs you describe but those who are the street dogs. And these street dogs have no objection to kill humans. Here are three cases in Kerala of street dogs killing elderly people.

These feral dogs are not a different sub species.

They are Indies (its an official breed now @Axomiya_lora ) only.

All dogs are one generation away from becoming wolves.

What is so difficult to understand.

Do we start culling homeless because some of them could snap and become axe murderers?

I used to enjoy ajtr's posts even when I was not a member of the forum. She was quite feisty and gave it equally to both Indians and Pakistanis.

To be fair, she used to give it to us more.

And I was given special attention.

I was the privileged Parsi who had never seen the seamy side of India.

Well, wolves are basically a wild type of forest or mountain dog. In India there is another type of wild called called Dhole.

I think you should watch the Liam Neeson film "The Grey". You will see the true nature of dogs. Of course the film is about wolves but we can extend it to all dogs.

My idea about the homeless is that they first should be given free homes and a means to sustenance. I also know the sad fact that some of them are not mentally normal because of being homeless and hungry and desperate for a long time.

To be fair, she used to give it to us more.

I see.

I don't see a birthed-yesterday innocence in you based on the interactions I see between you and @jbgt90, about your individual adventures. You also wrote earlier today about facing off with some muzzies.

Meoww..

Cats are solely responsible for the diminishing bird population, cats kill for fun to satisfy their hunting instinct, whereas dogs are more or less dependent on their caregivers.

Our desi dog used to assist the momma cat in guarding her kittens from other stray dogs and cats, but i must say that mother cats don't need any help unless ganged up by many dogs at once. Instincts and hormones makes them do the improbable.

Please stop thinking ill of dogs, don't be a dog t€rrorist..:cheesy:

I've seen The Grey many times. Raw and friggin powerful. Like only he can pull off.

Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Do not go gentle into that good night.

Dhole are more coyote than wolf.

Do you know who is the second best endurance athlete of the animal predator world?

Wolves.

Do you know who is No. 1?

Man.

A dog is the symbiotic relationship between the two that is as old as humankind itself.

About the miyas. A senior miya (as usual three on one bike) racing back from Kondhwa (mini Pakistan) took out his frustration at being humped by me by kicking my bike. Twice.

At that time I had no idea that there was another bike tailing the two I was racing with. RX100s (miya bhai favorite) versus my souped up KB. Old days.

The fight happened right outside the police station. On the busiest chowk of camp.

They wanted me to take my helmet off. Started yanking at the chin bar. I butted the leader in the face with it so that they got the correct message. After that it was a free for all.

I got whacked good. But there were three of them whose faces were a pulpy mess at the end of it.

Huge difference between a feral dog and a feral cat, in my opinion. Dholes are feral dog, not the strays who have human contact very frequently. OTOH, every cat that doesn't meow or reciprocate to the human call beyond a certain age is a feral.

An elderly stray dog can be adopted not an adult cat without prior human exposure.

There are almost no cats now and since the lock-down began, decrease in pollution too. So why hasn't the bird population returned ?? Answer, crows. Of course I have seen one or two little birds hopping on the trees in front of my house but not much. No ideal twittering. Two days ago my mother told me that in the morning she heard panicked screeches of an eagle or a baby eagle, possibly being attacked by crows.

Just like we now see stray dogs on the ground, we also now see crows on the trees.

OK, I didn't know that.

Man.

Oh yes, those ancient postal runners and those present champion sports runners from Africa who participate in so many races, from India to North Korea.

No other predator can outrun these two over days and weeks and multiple hundred miles.

Its what made them apex predators. Long before weapons and technology.

Wah! You want to see the birds return in a month!?

Close your eyes and open the mind, i am sure you will hear the birds speaking even in your concrete jungle.
