Nothing brings a nation together like a common enemy and the Olympics give us an excuse to degrade every other country on the planet world without it seeming xenophobic.

It was in the midst of this festive atmosphere that Gallup Korea published their annual poll showing the country’s opinion of the rest of the world. The results? South Korea hates Japan even more than North Korea and loves America the most.

Okay, so the Japanese and South Koreans don’t get alone—what else is new? Japan hit the top of the same list back in 2002 and it shouldn’t be too hard to find a poll in Japan where Korea scores the same.

What is different about this year’s results is how much Korea seems to hate Japan: whereas 19.1% of South Koreans polled said they hold a unfavorable view of runner-up country China, a whopping 44.1% of respondents answered the same of Japan. While K-pop tops Japanese music charts and young Japanese women dream of bagging a Korean boy, nearly half of Korea is telling Japan to shove off.

Of course, the timing of the research was far from ideal: 1500 male and female Korean adults were polled over 16 days from July 14 to July 29—only a month after right-wing Japanese activist Nobuyuki Suzuki enraged the entire country by setting up a sign reaffirming Japan’s claim disputed islands and denouncing comfort women as prostitutes next to a comfort women memorial statue in Seoul.

Here are the 2012 results compared with 2002 in parenthesis (translated from Japanese):

■ South Korea’s Top 5 Least Favorite Countries
1. Japan – 44.1% (33.4% in 2002)
2. China – 19.1% (4.6%)
3. North Korea – 11.7% (17.3%)
4. America – 4.8% (18%)
5. Iraq – 0.7% (0.7%)

■ South Korea’s Top 5 Favorite Countries
1. America – 21.5% (16.5% in 2002)
2. Australia – 19% (12.5%)
3. Switzerland – 8% (8.8%)
4. Canada – 7.4% (6.6%)
5. England – 5.1% (3%)

On the other hand, South Koreans seem to love Americans more than ever before. This was especially true of respondents over the age of 60, 32.8% of whom said they felt America was still one of the good guys. Interestingly enough, America also makes the list for top 5 most disliked countries, but looking at the drop from 18% in 2002 to 4.8% this year shows that South Korea has been warming up to the country over the past decade.

@Sam. , but look at this man. Does that look normal to you? To rip at our flag and bite it with his teeth? Seriously, Korea is very unstable in its unnecessary excessive emotional volatility. That is something that both the North and South Koreans share --- a common hate in Japan.

Yet they forget the good Japan brought to Korea. Japan brought industry, modernization to Korea. Before we colonized them, they were a backwards, feudalistic, autocratic society. Where education was non-existent, and the majority of people lived in subsistence.

The Japanese Empire, in its eternal glory, brought modernity and civilization to Chosen.

Maybe they didn't want industry but you can't possibly justify taking over others country then justify with development , that way rich countries must conquer the whole world.

I don't believe in this theories ,there is a no justification for imperialism sensai.

That's interesting isn't it? lol

They hate both Japan and China, its so weird eh? Well what can we expect, a shrimp between two whale will always hate the whales.

Kudos for the Koreans, since Japan still owes everyone a proper apology.

They hate Japan the most, but after us they hate China as well. China is #2 hated country in Korea.

@Nihonjin1051 Why they dislike so much Japan ? Because of the past ? The two nations/people can't advance if they stay in the past, they need to go ahead, forget the past and everything will be fine.
(Or they just hate everyone for nothing lol ?)
Just a great exemple : France and Germany, some years ago were ennemies,it wasn't a love story between the 2 people, but today are allies/like brothers. (even if they spy on us  )

Just like i said before, Korean is smarter ... S.Korea's export business need China market & their diplomacy more pro-China when competing with Japan.

It's simple for S.Korea that enemy's enemy is their friend, Japan or China ?

News Analysis: China-S. Korea FTA to give opportunity for creating advanced industries
SEOUL, 2015, Feb. 25 (Xinhua) -- Free trade agreement (FTA) between China and South Korea would give both countries an opportunity to jointly create and develop advanced industries as demand for high- quality products would rise before the bilateral free trade pact is completely implemented.

Under the accord, South Korea will eliminate tariffs on 92 percent of all products from China within 20 years after the FTA implementation in return for China abolishing tariffs on 91 percent of all South Korean goods.

Trade between China and South Korea kept rising from 6.4 billion dollars in 1992 to 228.9 billion dollars in 2013. China has been South Korea's biggest trading partner since 2004.

Mon ami @Gabriel92 , yes , the hatred Koreans have for Japan (even towards China) is indeed very excessive. I think it is based on their history of being a hermit kingdom, trapped between two imposing powers (Imperial China and Imperial Japan) and being the source of foreign invasions (The Manchu Chinese invaded Northern Korea plenty of times, as well as the Chinese imposed their imperial system on the Koreans; the Japanese under Hideyoshi Toyotomi invaded Korea during the Imjin Wars , conquering the country , before Japan abandoned the country after Hideyoshi died; then Japan ejected Chinese influence in Korea after Japan defeated China in the 1st Sino Japanese War, then seized Korea effectively merging the Chosen Empire with the Japanese Empire in 1905).

So the Koreans have a hatred because Korea was conquered in totality by Japan, and ruled for over half a century. But the thing that these extremist Koreans fail to mention is that how much Japan developed Korea. Japan had built schools, hospitals, roads, railroads, modernized farming , modernized fishing, introduced industrialization to Korea, and this led to the growth of the Korean population under Japanese rule. The level of literacy in Korea prior to Japanese rule was abhoric , most of the country was illiterate , but under the rule of the Japanese Empire, Korean literacy rates was at par with that of Japan proper, and at the same level as that of Taiwan , which was also part of the Japanese Empire during that time.

The problem here is that Korean leadership continue to feed their people only negative information of life under Japan. They purposely ignore the overwhelming good that Japan did for Korea.
