The Middle Income Trap awaits China

"South Korea has a lot of focus and drive. Their companies also have scale and depth - including economies of scale. Part of this is because South Korea never cared about diversity. They bet it all on a half dozen gigantic mega-corps to run everything. It gives them the scale to get a foothold, but if one failed it would be a national crisis. And you better believe the gov't would back those companies up all the way to the abyss with taxpayer financing, even if it had to put every person in Korea at risk to do so. If their bet had failed their entire country would've been wiped out with the companies."

"Also, it doesn't hurt that, at a very critical stage in its growth, South Korea's Cold War protector (i.e. the US) allowed them to basically export at will while keeping their market almost completely closed to imports -- which they still are to a large degree."

"One thing that makes China very different from South Korea is that China is big. South Korea is roughly the size of a single Chinese province. So one thing that the central government has to deal with is the fact that some provinces will be moving into upper incomes while other provinces are still in developing stage.

China's bigness helps it in these situations, because you can have different provinces and different localities try very different things, and then whatever works gets copied. In the case of South Korea, you have to decide on one economic policy, whereas with China, you can have six different policies and just see what works."

"South Korea is most commonly compared with Taiwan, which went a more American-style route to success with heavier emphasis on SMEs. Comparing the two countries, South Korea has better conglomerates with global brand recognition, while Taiwan has higher living standards.

Recently, however, Taiwan has been growing at a breathneck 8 or 9% speed due to, I'm told, tighter integration with the Chinese economy than South Korea's 6 or 7% growth rate."

I am a Hong Konger myself, do you think you know more than me about my own city?

We always refer to ourselves as "中国人" (Chinese people). Check the demographics, 95% of the Hong Kong population is Han Chinese.

Even the Singaporeans, who are majority Chinese ethnicity, still refer to themselves as "华人".
Korean is correct..you are just fakely defending China here...i have also heard and met many hong kongers online who hate CPC and PRC.

The substance of GDP growth is to make people to own a better income,it is necessarily.

I dont think the income increase in China will revive the manufacturing of the U.S. which is not enough to cancel the deficit. The most important is that America has already got used to depend on its $,as the same way a person who takes drugs.

Japan and South Korea world brands are just limited in the electronic product fields. Those products affact people's daily life finitely.Agriculture, textile industry and basic industry are the most important factor of nation's economy.

The bottom line, is that Hong Kong is 95% Han Chinese. And Hong Kong is a part of the PRC.

Hong Kong people are a subset of the Cantonese people. Most of us can trace our ancestors back to Guangdong province.

This is simply a fact. You can check it yourself.

BBC??? - ???? - ??14??????????

65% of people in Hong Kong identify themselves as Hong Kongese, not Chinese. Only the mainland immigrants like yourself all yourself Chinese.

That's true only if you make the unproven assumption those who consider themselves Hong Kongese don't consider themselves Chinese. If I participate in a similar survey in Beijing I would pick Beijinger over Chinese. That, of course, doesn't imply I don't consider myself Chinese.

This is the secret sauce behind world-class corporations in Japan and Korea. Japanese and Korean corporations practice life-time employment and make heavy investment in training of those workers for a decade. This is only possible because the social norm discourages workers from moving between companies, and it is the heavy investment in human capital that turned these companies into world-class competitors.

On the other hand, there is no company loyalty among Chinese workers, who jump companies at the slightest offer of salary increase. Since Chinese corporations cannot trust their workers, they make no investment in their workers, and prefer to steal workers from other companies if necessary.

This is why the rise of Japanese/Korean style world-class corporation is impossible under Chinese culture. There were no world class corporations in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and there won't be in China.

I read a couple of weeks ago Groupon's COO, who originally came to Groupon from Google, had ditched Groupon to rejoin Google. I'm sure a corporate culture so severely lacking in the loyalty department would doom Silicon Valley to be forever populated by mom-and-pop stores.

Exactly right. Same with Shanghainese.

Just because someone identifies themselves as Shanghainese, doesn't mean that they don't consider themselves to be Chinese.

Hong Kong people are PRC citizens, we are ethnically/culturally Han Chinese, we speak a Chinese dialect (Cantonese), etc.

Saying that Hong Kong people are not Chinese, is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. What are we then, Africans? Norwegians?

.
What are you ??Uhm......you're may be belong Bai Yue(Bach Viet-Hundred Viet) people just like Viet Nam(Yue Nan), but you got assimilated by Han and forgot your ancestor already don't forget that you have diffrent language with Han in the North .

Don't recognize our enemy as your father , bro .

Hahahahaha...

Which is the description of a 3rd world economy.

The bottom line, is that Hong Kong is 95% Han Chinese. And Hong Kong is a part of the PRC.

Hong Kong people are a subset of the Cantonese people. Most of us can trace our ancestors back to Guangdong province.
Yet 65% of Hong-Kongese don't feel they are Chinese. The analogy is similar to Australians; Australians originate from Britain, but Austrians have an unique identity separate from the Brisith.

Hong Kongese are Cantonese alright, but with an identity different from mainlanders. Being called "Chinese" is an insult to Hong-Kongese, ditto for Taiwanese.

So your logic is that: when a crazy Korean shouts at the normal people that he is a dog not a human being, so he is a dog not a human being. So we should consider this korean as a dog not a human being?

So let the north koreans to have enough food to eat and clothes to wear. Dont come to China as beggars for these kinds of third world things.
