The Kanal Istanbul project should be stopped

If Istanbul becomes an island in case of war enemy will destroy the bridges and ships so no supplies .
This is completely unreal. The weakening of the defense in Trakya totally a lie. Don't believe such ridiculous stories. To them Canakkale is completely vulnerable to attacked now since there is no bridge or something else, this is BS. And The other Side of the coin, We can get our money that i couldnt get bosphorous ship transition because of montro agreement, almost 1.5 billion dollar every year.

This is really ridiculous bro.
We ll never have difficulty defending an inner island where we are local people, not offensive side. With the same logic, We had to have difficulty in the war of Çanakkale even with the technology of that time . These are childish arguments to defend opposition.

I'm neither opposing nor am I supporting this project but it's true that Greek defense sites are stating that Istanbul would be out of the reach of Greek land forces if this project becomes reality.

Some people are really comparing that project to the importance of Suez and Panama. :D

While Panama and Suez connect the trading routes between North America, East Asia and Western Europe, the Bosphorus only has some importance to a part of European Russia and the rest of the pi*s poor Black sea states like Romania, Bulgaria, Georgia and Ukraine. Probably not even 1% of all the goods traded in the world pass trough the Bosphorus for the Canal to make the huge profits some people dream about in here.

How are you gonna make someone pay tens of thousands of dollars to use a Canal when he can just wait a bit more and use the Bosphorus for free. And stupid excuses like “yeah bro, we gonna close the Bosphorus for traffic all the time with some fake reasons” is not going to work. The same way it is not working with the new Bridges or Tunnels or Airports any other infrastructure built by AKPs favorite method: Build- Operate- Transfer.
It’s not like some of the users of the Straits can’t use alternative routes and ports too: Thessaloniki, Alexandropolis and the Danube river etc can easily become alternatives for some of the cargo from and to Bulgaria, Romania and even Ukraine.

The only thing that will happen here is that companies and people close to the Government will buy all the land on the route of the Canal and make millions and billions from state compensations. After that billions in foreign loans will be taken from the banks to finance the project and again companies close to Erdogan will build the infrastructure while AKTrolls will all cheer how Turks have not even spent a penny on the project. In the end again Turkish taxpayers will spend billions every year to compensate the companies because nobody uses the Canal but the contracts guarantee them a certain amount of ships per years that will never ever use it.

My question is how do you want to make the Tanker use the Canal ($$$) instead the Bosphorus (for free)?
With Panama and Suez ships save thousands of miles but with Canal Istanbul?

This project will cost a sh!t ton of money + new infrastructure in form of bridges and tunnels, i hope you guys are aware of our financial situation.

Crossing the Bosphorus is not as simple as you think. You must make an appointment weeks in advance. The ships wait in the Bosphorus for days. This affects freight prices and hence cost. To be able to cross the Bosphorus early, the companies will pay more money. In addition, you can make it compulsory to cross the channel to oil tankers threatening the natural life during the passage of the Bosphorus.
The channel is also important not only in economic terms but also in military terms. A change in the Straits contract also affects the balance of superpowers. States that do not have a Black Sea coast cannot have warships in the Black Sea for more than 21 days. The Americans are trying to overcome this by means of hulla.

You cannot close the Bosphorus strait - for whatever reason other than those specified within - without breeching the Montreux Convention. So, the only way to make the canal worth its investment would be to provide the financial incentives for ships to use it. Like, you pay a small fee and pass instantly, or you pay nothing and wait two days to pass the strait. Moving tanker traffic over to the strait would make a lot of sense from an environmental point of view, but the traffic right now is about 20-30 tankers a day. The canal is designed for a 150 ship per day rate as far as I know. Moreover, building the canal itself does incur a serious environmental penalty on the region (for a multitude of reasons).

It seems to me that the monies to be allocated for this would be better spent in more pressing infrastructure projects. So, from an outsiders' point of view, it really doesn't make much sense. There must be a catch somewhere.
