The Liberty V-12 was a 27 liter 400 hp engine designed for mass production and to spawn off modular variants. It powered the Curtiss NC-4 flying boat, the first airplane to make it across the Atlantic:

The Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" was one of the very first airplanes used as a trainer, initially powered by a 90 hp V-8 engine. The world's first radiotelephonic "plane-to-plane" and "ground-to-plane" communications were achieved by US Army JN-4s:

In addition to the forward firing Vickers gun on the fuselage, the top wing mounted Lewis .303 machine gun had a special Foster mounting for changing ammunition drums in flight and for increasing the range of motion:
