The Curse of Bollywood

You must also ban Shah Rukh Khan and his Russian girls who had house full audiences!

Yes, so was the world cup matches, brian adams, atif aslam concerts etc.
Even Metallica(if they come this year) will sure have sell out performance.

What's the big deal?

"It is extremely unfortunate that despite our rich and varied culture, we in Bangladesh have allowed Bollywood to take such a hold of our imagination. "

Why so?

Therein lies answer to the author's question ......

I think the author should visit South India and see inspite of Bollywood how the local film industry is thriving. The films are made on a very low budget without much glitz , glamour or foreign locations but every year they take home a lot of national film awards.

Bollywood is popular in BD because of a very weak local film industry. Period.

I don't know if it's just me, but Bollywood films these days seem so gay to me. My opinion :D

Would you please locate a theater in
BD where they play Bollywood movies?

If one walk through the streets he would understand
the difference in BD and other south asian countries
on what sorts of music is played in BD.

But I've said before, many people do watch this
movies through piracy.

.
I agree with the author on most points but then again, I'm no fan of Bollywood.

.
I know bollywood is a soulless eye candy which has nothing to offer for thinking audience. But I wish Bangladesh actually makes quality movies to take on Bollywood instead of ugly, cheap version of the same old Bollywood.

It is to protect the local film industry. Anyway most films our local film industry is a copy of bollywood movies. The original bangladeshi film media is bangladeshi drama and telefilms and they are very good too

The big deal is actually a small deal.

Now, if Bombay films are such a curse for Bangaldesh, then why have the curse. Ban it.

Why also have Shah Rukh Khan coming over to perform ? Just don't have the shows.

You have your peace and we don't have to have this grumbling on PDF.

Thats because Bollywood movies are banned in Bangladesh. Here's an interesting article from BBC.

Bangladeshi film-makers and actors say they have forced the government to reverse last weekend's decision to allow cinemas to show Indian films. Representatives of the film industry complained that the move could wipe out thousands of jobs.

There has been no official word yet from the government. But a leading Bangladeshi film star told the BBC that the prime minister's office had indicated the ban on Indian films would not be lifted after all. The star, Razzak, said that a demonstration would not now go ahead as planned. Film industry leaders had warned that 25,000 jobs could be in danger if Bangladeshi cinemas were allowed to show Indian movies. They were banned in 1972 to protect local film makers and the local culture.

But cinema owners complain that Bangladeshi-made films are simply not popular enough, and that the middle-classes in particular prefer now to watch pirated DVDs of Bollywood films in the comfort of their own homes.
