The Conflict in Syria as it Relates to Turkey | Updates & Discussions

If it was up to me, i'd propose a referandum for the coastal and northwestern regions where Turkmen are in high number, just like Hatay style. The situation, with the given circumstances, is screaming for such an opportunity, no?

With due respect, I think annexing parts from Syria will give excuse for Kurdish nationalists to partition their own part as well. For stability, the best option would be to keep both Syria and Iraq intact, making sure minority rights are protected. That is also the official Western/US policy, although some of them seem to have a certain weakness for an independent Kurdistan.

Let the Kurds and ISIS kill each other, while the Syrian Turkmen based resistance can attack Assad along with other moderate FSA trained in Saudi camps, but not sure if these FSA would be non-Salafi. I would avoid working with Salafi's at all cost, at any time they can turn to something like ISIS.

You're right, it might serve as an example to others, and above all an independent pyd would encourage pkk to step up its terrorist attacks in Turkey. However, if pyd somehow declares independence first, i'd love to see those Turkmen do the same, though i doubt how that will work since there are without doubt lots of Arabs and Kurds in those Turkmen regions too.
I support FSA against Assad, but it's also known that a portion of fsa switched over to the biggest scums, isis. How to prevent that? It's going to be tough and unpredictable for Turkey and other fsa supporting countries. Imo especially Turkey and the local countries would like to finish this mess asap, but the main backers, western countries, keep the situation pretty status quo (there were even western voices to work with Assad against isis) by not providing crucial help and expecting the local countries to take their (mainly US) responsibility and solve their decade old mess and mistakes. Whatever Turkish govt does, i hope they steer our country safely though this minezone.

Part of the US policy establishment is clueless and there are others like this so called expert, in reality is a Assad and PKK supporter:

Not sure what it is, but sometimes I genuinely feel that the US/Israel/West want to keep a balanced fire going in the region, so people keep getting killed from both sides.

Syrian Turkmens can be a great asset in Turkey's Syria strategy. They know the language and terrain, they are local. You can only recruit Sunni's among them, because Shia's will create complications on the ground. And they can be used to bring in non-Salafi Syrian Arabs. I would not trust the Saudi's about this, specially the people that come out of Saudi training camps.

Why Saudi's, Emirati's, Qatari's and Kuwaiti's cannot be trusted, because many of them believe in Salafism and that loyalty is deeply ingrained. Before the emergence of ISIS it was not clear to people, but after ISIS came out of the shadows, it is clear what is going on. I believe even the Turkish govt. and intelligence has been caught off guard.

Turkey does not have the option to stay aloof, it is time to get involved, but it must be with the right people, namely non-Salafi Sunni Arabs in both Iraq and Syria. And Turkmens will be a great conduit to reach out to them.

Iraqi Kurdistan votes to deploy Peshmerga to Kobani

Iraq's Kurdish parliament unanimously votes to deploy Peshmerga forces in Syrian town of Kobani besieged by ISIL militants.

World Bulletin/News Desk

Lawmakers in Iraq's Kurdistan region on Wednesday voted in favour of sending forces to the besieged Syrian town of Kobani via Turkey, MPs said.

Kurdistan's President Masoud Barzani sent a letter to parliament late on Tuesday seeking approval to deploy the region's peshmerga forces abroad, to fight alongside Syrian Kurds.

"Today in parliament we agreed to send the peshmerga forces to Kobani as soon as possible," MP Mahmoud Haji Omer said.

Two senior Kurdish officials said late on Tuesday that preparations were under way to send a small number of peshmerga to Kobani, but that it would take several days until the necessary arrangements were in place.

Iraqi Kurdish official Hemin Hawrami said on Twitter that the peshmerga would go equipped with heavy weapons.

According to the Iraqi Constitution, peshmerga forces are a part of the Iraqi defense system. However, they are not connected to the Iraqi Ministry of Defense. Peshmerga only act on the orders of President Barzani, spokesman of Iraqi Kurdistan region's Peshmerga Ministry Jabbar Yavar said last week.

“This issue is not clarified between Baghdad and Erbil government until now but we believe that the new Iraqi government will resolve this problem,” he also said.

The Kurdish majority border town of Kobani, which is under the control of the People’s Protection Units -- the armed wing of the Democratic Union Party -- has been the scene of fierce battles between Kurdish groups and ISIL since mid-September.

Ankara asks for a list of names

Ankara asked for the list of Peshmergas to pass through Erbil
and if an agreement occurs then Peshmerga allowed to Kobani passing through Erbil, Turkish media reported.

The Iraq Kurdish Regional Government has chosen carefully the Peshmergas to get to the conflict zone. Ankara asked from Erbil for a complete list of Peshmergas want to get to Kobani. Turkey stipulate that Peshmerga can leave the zone only when they agree to carry back the arms and particularly the vehicles, which they will bring along themselves.

Ankara wants Peshmergas to leave Kobani as soon as possible after the operation ended and plans to set a three-month limit for the operation. Peshmergas will set back from the conflict zone as soon as possible after they get a grip on the city. But if the operation will prolong and the ISIL target the other Kurdish regions, then it would be continued up to 18 months. The Kurdish Regional Government, depending on this possible result, would increase the number of Peshmergas, the Turkish daily Yeni Safak reported.

Ankara will be informed about all Peshmergas' arm-stocks based on its stipulation on that the Peshmerga have to take back all the staff, arms and especially vehicles, except for military vehicles for health care. Ankara conveyed his concerns, about if arms fall the hands of PKK, to Erbil and Erbil government said it will take into account the sensitivities on the matter.

If there are former members of PKK among the Peshmergas, they will not be allowed to pass through.

Turkish fighter jets in military exercise to protect historic site in Syria from ISIL
The commander of the Turkish Air Force, Gen. Akın Öztürk, inspected a military exercise on Oct. 21 aimed at protecting frontier military posts, including the Tomb of Süleyman Şah in Syria.

The tomb has recently come into focus as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) made incursions into the region, according to both Turkish and U.S. officials.

“Gen. Öztürk flew over with pilots deployed at the Diyarbakır 181st Squadron command and inspected a military exercise planned [designed to] protect the Süleyman Şah military post and for the task of the Air Force in supporting military posts,” a written statement by the Turkish Air Force said on Oct. 27.

Öztürk inspected joint exercises with the Land Forces on the border with Iraq and Syria, according to the statement.

The general had a wireless conversation with the commander of the tomb and gave the message that the army was ready to stand by the post in the time of need, it added.

According to international agreements, the tomb, which is located less than 40 kilometers inside Syrian territory, is considered Turkish territory. Turkey has some 40 soldiers stationed at the tomb for its protection.

There have been reports that the Turkish army is preparing a small-scale operation for the protection of the tomb in the event of an attack by ISIL. Some other press reports suggested that the Turkish government has considered evacuating the tomb.

A recent motion by Parliament authorized the Turkish Armed Forces to conduct cross-border operations in Iraq and Syria and permit the deployment of foreign troops on its soil.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan issued a special Eid al-Adha message on Oct. 3 to the Turkish soldiers guarding the tomb, vowing that the army would not hesitate to provide immediate support in the event of an attack.

His message followed one released by Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel, who assured soldiers they were not alone.

Erdoğan told the troops that the people and their prayers were with them. “The Turkish Armed Forces will not hesitate to rush to your aid without delay,” he said.

I am getting bored of following Syrian conflict news. Both Assad, and his opposition are bunch of incompetent low-IQ morons. Does Anyone else have the same feelings? @Alienoz_TR @Sinan @xenon54 @Hakan @tesla
I have never seen anyone being more stupid than these goons. I don't even understand how Assad lost to oppositions at the beginning and how fast his forces lose battle, cities, ... in each raid, in contrast to having big air force and thousands of tanks, .... The FSA is also another incompetent goon. They have been pumped by a lot of equipments, TOWs, ... yet they cannot do shit against anyone. The only advantage of ISIS is having a handful of Chechens who know how to fight, but, even ISIS are not as much as strong that they are shown. those ISIS stupids still fight with sandals, and are not encountered any serious armed forces on the ground. In sum, it's like watching bunch of turtles doing a marathon competition.

A man with a belief is stronger than a man without one.

History of the middleast is changing in front of our eyes.

Your post had nothing to do with what I said.
A man with a belief is stronger than a man without one.
Bull crap. The only thing that believer has more, is stupidity. Each one of Chinese, Russians, Europeans, Americans, are by far stronger than all your believer middle easterners, combined.
History of the middleast is changing in front of our eyes.
It is always changing in each era. It is changing now as well. Yet, it is not my point. Read my post again.

Agreed, those rebels are only seen as strong because of the Syrian and Iraqi armies' weaknesses plus fundamental problems in their societies and politics. Any proper army should be able to mop the floor with such scum in frontal combat. If this performance of the Syrian and Iraqi army is the average of the Arab world, i'd worry if i was them. pkk/pyd/peshmerga are lost without air support, so their 'immortal guerrillas' are nothing but a fallacy. nothing is what it seems in the ME :)

What annoys me too, though, is how some Assad fanboys are pissed off about @Alienoz_TR 's isis posts, yet from what i have seen the Assad fanclub ironically only post pro-Assad material.

.
@Alienoz_TR Brother, can you provide an estimation of how much(what percentage) of Assheads equipments including Tanks, aircrafts, ... are remaining?
I think he has lost about 50-60% of his tanks, AFVs, ...
These are ~800 confirmed tank kills and captures on video.
Assad regularly receives spare parts from Russia (one ship comes each week).
So he has plenty of tanks still. I think tank crews are actually a bigger problem for Assad than tanks.

That's exactly my point ;)
Those kurds proved to be the most useless ones, which it was what one would expect.
those arab armies, also proved not to be useful even against bunch of Kalashnikov owning civilians. I was always wondering how Israel easily destroyed all arabs together, when jews were not even in a good condition. Also, I was always amazed how Iraq, with the support of all arabs, could not do anything against Iran, when Iran was in the early days of after revolution era and did not even had 100K troops against 500K+ troops of Iraq. Now these two mysteries are unfolding for me. Those ISIS and other islamists also showed to be bunch of savages, who can only behead captives, ... but cannot even make peace amongst themselves, and their brain is incapable of understanding, and using any military tactics. As I said, the solely advantage of ISIS is having some Chechens, which has been a big leverage for them.
